"A Tribute to SAQUAREMA" - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil -by Paulo Piqueres -

After a long waiting period of 15 years, fortunately the site of Brazilian stage of World Circuit of Surfing arrived to Itaúna Beach, Saquarema, 90 km from Rio de Janeiro.
Itaúana Beach has a "gringa"(foreign) wave as the guys said...
Since a long time ago I watched on TV and read the Surfing magazines that  Saquarema was the "Maracanã" of Surfing, as they call. But this time I had the opportunity to see with my eyes.
The swell arrived at right time as everybody was waiting for. I could work: to film and take photos from the nicest event, in therms of level of competition, that I have already been in this ten years of WCT -World Championship Tour, now CT. Big and heavy waves, with good formation, strenght, that break to the left. The surfers -top athletes - also showed why they are in the elite of surfing.
So thank you "Saquarema", and the nice people that treated me very well.
See you next year..

Surf "the most beautiful sport".

Introduction
---------------

                                Porto Alegre -RS - 5:49 am -May 3rd,  2017

Rio de Janeiro -RJ - 8:18 am -May 3rd, 2017

I passed the Christimas time and the New Year's eve, in Rio de Janeiro. I went to Reveillon in Copacabana Beach, for the third time. As in 2014 and 2015 when Gabriel Medina(BRA) and Adriano de Souza(BRA)were World Champions of Surfing respectivelly. The last year 2016, I had no much work, because the media did not release much material about the Final stage in Pipeline, Hawaii.Because the World Circuit had already a Champion since October, when John John Florence(HAW) won in the waves of Portugal, in the 10th stage of the circuit.
So in January I prepared Tributes to 2016 World Champions - Men's -John John Florence(HAW) and Women's - Tyler Wright(AUS), besides a Overview of the 2017 Wild Card -Women's Championship Tour - Lakey Peterson(USA). During this period, the blog had so many accesses, more than 8,000.
I stayed in Rio till the Carnival, this year in the final of February. I would like to stay once, because the previous years I left...
This year the Big Champion of Carnival in Rio was Portela,(blue and white)the favorite "samba school" of my dad that unfortunately passed away in 2005, leaving me an empty...
In beginning of March I went to Porto Alegre, because I had many things to do related to: banks, car, equipment, database server, IPVA, IPTU...Besides prepare my stuff to the next stage in Saquarema, RJ.There were many holydays in April, so I thought about and decided to stay till May in the South, working in thre first three stage in Australia. And also preparing a Tribute to the great surfer, Taj Burrow(AUS), that won the last World Championship in Saquarema, in 2002. Besides an overview of the Tour in Brazil in this period of 15 years, from 2002 to 2017; My first WCt was in 2008 in Imbituba, Santa Catarina, this one in Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro,  was my tenth WCT.I am so pround of my job, last year I quitted for while and missed it a lot...
I bought the airplane ticket to May 2nd, just after the holyday of May first, Day of Labor in Brazil, a week before the contest OI Rio Pro, from May 9th to 20th.

Stay or not in Saquarema
-------------------------------

Before leaving Porto Alegre a nice friend of mine asked me about this "trip" to Saquarema, because I usually traveled a lot in our country, to the coast of RS, SC, and RJ, an to the West of SC, PR, and MS, Federal Capital, Brasília-I have already went there three times when I was working with documents of foreign trade- besides three trips to Overseas, two to the USA, and one to Europe. I answered her that the fist time is usually  more difficult because we have no idea, ways, feelings about before, but I had experience, always keep calm, respect the people, the locals, and believe so much in "God". I am kind of lonely guy , I do everything by myself, the posts in the blog and site, prepare Version, Tributes, Overviews, take pictures and now film the events. I am enjoying so much to shoot surfing, it is not easy, but I am improving after three  events in Rio de Janeiro: 2016 Oi Rio Pro; Independence Day Parade on September 7th 2016 on Presidente Vargas St snf the Olympic Games, and the last one 2017 OI Rio Pro, in Saquarema, RJ.
I searched the bus schedule from Rio de Janeiro to Saquarema, and from Saquarema to Rio de Janeiro. So I decided to stay in Rio at the hotel and catch the bus of 1001 bus company at 6:05 am and arrived around 8.00 am in Saquarema, And after the contest come back to Rio for doing my work: post the results, the photos, Versions of Newspapers articles about the stage of World Championship. I do this work since 2014 when Gabriel Medina was the first Brazil World Champion. I like prepare Versions, I am still learning, mainly the therms of surfing.

The first day
---------------

I woke up around 4:00 am, shave myself, took a shower, drink some coffee that I prepared with the coffee machine, and ate some fruit as banana, papaya, tangerine. I usually left my "luck" backpack  ready with the equipment: Video Camera, two cells phone, batteries, chargers, raincoat, bottle of water. I still do not have a tripod, but I will buy one. At 5:00 am I caught the bus line "355"-Madureira- to the bus station in Gamboa. Then I bought the ticket to Saquarema at 1001 Bus lines, and the Newspaper EXTRA, to prepare the Versions. So I caught the bus of 1001 lines, the same company that I used to go to São Paulo, and then go to Porto Alegre, 1001 bus company is excellent company. Then the bus left the bus station, and crossed the bridge  "Presidente Costa e Silva", knows a Bridge Rio-Niterói, with 13 km, builded in 1974. The bus passed through Maricá, Jaconé, and finally arrived in Saquarema. Saquarema reminds me Garopaba in Santa Catarina, where I lived in 2008. Saquarema is definetely a "surfing town" with big waves, beach culture,  Itaúna  is close to the Church of N.S. Nazaré,  a view so beautiful and unforgettable. We arrived in Saquarema before 8:00 am, so I asked for the directions to the beach. It was easier than I thought, just walking down a street straight to Oceânica Avenue, that is along the shore, so I was in Itaúna. This part I remember Praia da Vila, in Imbituba, Santa Catarina. I usually stayed in Garopaba, and took the bus around 6:00 to Imbituba, and than walked to Vila beach.
When I was approaching the structure of the event, not so huge as in 2015 Barra da Tijuca, I could hear the sound of broadcast. I realize the event is ON. I arrived in the third heat of Round 1. Gabriel Medina(BRA)was defeated at opening heat and would dispute the Recap; Adriano de Souza(BRA)won his heat and was guaranteed in the Round 3. I choose a spot at right of the structure where were many professional, photographers, video makers. It was so nice my debut in Saquarema, in Itaúna Beach, the athletes surf a little far from the shore, so I used the "zoom" all the time. I used two batteries in Men's competition. After I took some pictures of Women's competition.
Later on I went to bus station of Saquarema(foto), and took the bus of 15:50 to Rio de Janeiro, it took more time because the "rush" time, we arrived at 6:15pm. I took a bus to downtown, had a dinner, went to the hotel, took a shower, charge the batteries, and prepare the posts, versions in my notebook, by WI-FI. This was my routine during the championship when the days were "ON".

Lay days
-----------
ON Thursday May 11th, the third day of the event I went to Saquarema, Itaúna beach, then I realized the silence so probably the day was OFF. Soon I met a friend from São Paulo, that said for me- Today is OFF, but "go to the beach", he was leaving the beach, on Oceânica Avenue. At 8:30 am  I was approaching the event,so I realized the 2015 world Champion Adriano de souza, he was in the structure of 2017 OI Rio Pro in Itaúna beach, for a surfing session. Everybody wanted a selfie of the Idol, I filmed and took some photos of the champion, and said:

-Hi, My champion, good luck!!!

-The world Champion of Surfing turn the face and smiled, and said Hi...My first photo of Adriano de Souza was in Vila Beach, Imbituba, Santa Catarina, in 2009. He is so calm, polite, and humble guy.He was teaching a girl how to surf (the first steps, position on the surfboard, "pop-up",..)
After this I met a friend of Cabo Frio- RJ, the formersurfer Teco Rezende, that work in surf events for a long time, and I knew him in 2013. He is involved in  Museum of Surfing in Cabo Frio, RJ ...He gave me the surf Magazine "WQS" - and later on I went back to Saquarema Bus Station. I caught the 9:50 am bus to Rio de janeiro. So I went to downtown and then  to the hotel... I like to work in my room, with my notebook, and throught WI-FI, or 4G; sometimes I used broadband at University.

Round 4
-----------

This Round has only 12 surfers, in four heats of three men.Atheletes garanteed were: the World Champions: Adriano de souza(BRA),Gabriel Medina(BRA), Joel Parkinson(AUS), Mick Fanning(AUS), besides the Australians: Adrian Buchan, Julian Wilson, Owen Wright, and Matt Wilkinson were garanteed also, besides the South African, Jordy Smith, the North American Kanoa Igarashi, besides the Brazilians: Wiggolly Dantas and the highlight Yago Dora. The Hawaiians: Ezekiel Lau, John John Florence, Sebastian Ziets were "out" of the contest. This Round was disputed on "Sunday" after the first call; on the day 6 of the event the Brazillian Adriano de Souza(BRA), and the Australians: Adrian Buchan, Owen Wrigth, and Mick Fanning went directly to the Quarterfinals. The Sea went down with small waves, compared to the first days of the event. So the Orgazition started the Women's competition in the Semifinals, till the Final, the current World Champion Tyler Wright(AUS)defeated Johanne Defay(FRA).Tyler Wright(AUS)was the Champion in Saquarema contest, she already was Champion in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, in 2013 and 2016. The three times World Champion Carissa Moore(HAW)was defeated in the Round 2, the six times World Champion Stephanie Gilmore(AUS)was defeated in the Quarterfinals.

Waiting a big Swell
------------------------
The media and organization said that would arrived a big swell in Saquarema. As the Sea went down on the weekend and remained only eleven heats to finish the competition, so one more day of competition would be enough; On Monday, the seventh day of the period, I decided to stay in Rio for updating my blog and site, to prepare the versions remaining . I also rested for while, because I traveled to Saquarema, worked in the event, and came back to Rio de Janeiro, and  prepared the posts at night. I prepared my stuff to go Saquarema on Tuesday. I went early as usually, but was day OFF. I went to the beach, there was a strong wind, and the Sea was shaken, as they "say" even the outside looked like a "wash machine". I filmed some minutes, and took some photos and came back to Rio de Janeiro.

The last Day
---------------
I went to Saquarema, because the day might be ON. It was raining when approaching to Saquarema, where there is big lagoon, called Lagoon of Saquarema. So I went walking fast to Itaúna Beach , a met my friend of Juquei, that I know since 2013 WCT; he knows many surfers from Maresias, São Sebastião, São Paulo; he said "Stand By", next call will be at 8:40 am. I became happy because I will not lose any heat from the Round 5, because probably would be "ON". I arrived on the beach, positioned with the video camera, everything ready to start the Round 5. In this moment I met Mr. Sebastian Rojas, a top  photographer of surfing, other photographers from the staff, from surfing channels that I knew since my fist event in 2008. The organization the Round 5 will start sharply at 8:35 am the opening heat of Recap.

ROUND 5
-------------
At opening heat of the Recap - Joel Parkinson(AUS)defeated Wiggolly Dantas(BRA), that surfed very well in Itaúna Beach. Than in the second heat was the "best duel" of new generation, Yago Dora(BRA)defeated Gabriel Medina(BRA)at last wave, on last second. After Jordy Smith(RSA)overcame Julian Wilson(AUS) and in the last heat Matt Wilkinson(AUS)overcame  Kanoa Igarashi(USA), that surfed better this year in Itauna Beach. Fortunately the event continued ON to be disputed the

Quarterfinals
----------------
At opening heat Adriano de souza(BRA)defeated the 2012 World champion Joel Parkinson(AUS). In the second heat, the highlight Yago Dora(BRA)defeated the third World Champion, Mick Fanning(AUS)-has already won John John Florence(HAW) in the Round 3; and overcame Gabriel Medina(BRA) in the Round 5. In the third heat, "Ace" - Adrian Buchan- overcame the second place in the Ranking Jeep Leaderboard, Jordy Smith(RSA), and in the last heat, was a duel of giants, Matt Wilkinson(AUS)defeated his compatriot Owen Wright(AUS). Than was defined: Brasil x Australia in the Final.

Semifinals
-------------
At opening heat Adriano de Souza(BRA)stopped Yago Dora(BRA)both had the same coach, Leandro Dora. After, Adrian Buchan(AUS)defeated his compatriot Matt Wilkinson(AUS).

FINAL
---------
Adriano de Souza(BRA) x Adrian Buchan(AUS). At my opinion was the best heat of the event. Adriano de Souza(BRA)won for little difference; "Ace" Buchan(AUS) was so happy for disputing the Final in Saquarema, Brazil; against Adriano - who he knows from Surfing events since a long time - so crowded in  Itaúna, with the beach culture, and mainly the waves: big, heavy and long with "power"...

CONCLUSION
-------------------
I went to Saquarema, and Knew the best beach- Itaúna -  for surfing that I had ever known. I started in Rosa and Vila Beaches in Imbituba, and Silveira in Garopaba, all these beaches in Santa Catarina also have good conditions for surfing , however in Saquarema the Sea is more open, there is more space for surfing. The area is huge.  I did my work as usually on the beach, filmed and took photos. Prepared posts with results, and Version from EXTRA- Newspaper. Now I will prepare a Video as a Tribute to the Champion Adriano de Souza(BRA)of 2017 OI Rio Pro. My simple blog overcame 50,000 accesses this month. I travel , film , took photos, prepare posts, version, overview, tributes... I always do everthing by myself, this is the way I prefer, and I a improving each day, each shoot, each post, each version, each stage, each season... I hope to go to California in September.
Let's wait for.

OVERVIEW -Championship Tour # 4 -2017 OI RIO PRO - ITAÚNA BEACH, SAQUAREMA, RIO DE JANEIRO,BRAZIL by Paulo Piqueres -surfworldtour.blogspot.com
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 1 - Tuesday, May 9th
The first day of competitions in Itaúna beach the waves broke with power and the Sea was high, till midday, then the Sea began to go down. In the last heats was more difficult to find the waves. There were no surprises, except the current World champion J. J. Florence(HAW) that won the heat over two Brazilians, Miguel Pupo, and Yago Dora, who won the Trial, and almost passed directly to the Round 3 - he scored 16.64 against 16.67 of J.J. Florence(HAW).

Day 2 - Wednesday, May 10th
The contest started in the Round 2 -the Recap, but the Sea conditions were worsting, so the organization decided to stop on the heat 4. At opening heat the highlight Yago Dora(BRA) defeated the 5th position of Ranking -Jeep Leaderboard -kolohe Andino(USA);in the second heat Owen(AUS) overcame B. Lopes(BRA), G. Medina(BRA) passed by Jesse Mendes(BRA) in a fierce home duel.Later Matt Wilkinson(AUS),that already won a WQS event in 2012 in Itaúna beach,  also garanteed his place in the Round 3.

Day 3 -Thursday, May 11th
The Sea went down, with small waves, so was determined day OFF already in the first Call at 6:45 BRT.

Day 4 - Friday , May 12th,
The contest continued On from heat 5 of Round 2, till the heat 4 of the Round 3.The world champions Adriano de Souza(BRA), Gabriel Medina(BRA), Mick Fanning(AUS) and Joel Parkinson(AUS)passed the Round 3, and were garanteed in the Round 4.

Day 5 -Saturday,  May 13th
The event continued On, from heat 6 of Round 3. At opening heat, Yago Dora(BRA) this time, defeated the Hawaiian J.J. Florence;J. Smith(RSA) defeated Jadson Andre(BRA)for little difference, and the Australians, Adrian  Buchan, Matt wilkinson,, Julian Wilson and Owen Wright also passed to the round 4. Unfortunately in the heat 10, according to the judges Filipe Toledo did interference on the opening wave against Kanoa Igarashi(USA), when was still with no priority. F. Toledo(BRA) complained a lot and tried to invade a restricted area in the structure of the event in Itaúna.After, with "cold head" he apologized to WSL, fans, sponsors, media, and so on, however was suspended in the next event in Fiji. .In the round 4, Adriano and the Australians, Mick  Fanning, Adrian Buchan and Owen Wright  all were surfing very well in Itaúna, won and went directly to the Quarterfinals.

Day 6 - Sunday, May 14th
The event was stopped, only had competitions of Women's championship. The sea was not high.

Dat 7 - Monday, May 15th
The Sea went down and contest was OFF for the day.

Day 8 - Tuesday, May 16th
The swell that was forecasted since the beginning of the contest, arrived so strong, but let the Sea without conditions for surfing  even the outside was as they call "wash machine".

Day 9 - Wednesday May 17th
The event stayed in Stand By for two times, but started at 8:35 am, with the Round 5 - the recap -.J. Parkinson(AUS) defeated the surfer of Ubatuba, São Paulo, Wiggolly Dantas(BRA) that surfed very well in Saquarema, in his third year in the elite. On second heat Gabriel Medina(BRA)was defeated for detail by Yago Dora(BRA). Sharply in the final of the heat, a series was approaching the beach break, and Gabriel Medina(BRA) had the "priority"; the 2014 World Champion with his excellent Sea reading waited a "big wave" what could facilitate his manuevers, as aerials with full rotation. In the last seconds of the heat, the wave arrived, Gabriel surfed an high aerial with  rotation; so behind Yago surfed an aerial not high with full rotation on the end of the wave. When the scores came out, Gabriel turned the heat, but Yago  won with the score of his last wave of the heat. Perhaps one of the best heat of the new generation. After, in the second heat, J. Smith(RSA)defeated J. Wilson(AUS)that is edge surfer too, but did not find the waves in Itaúna.In the third heat, M. Wilkinson(AUS) defetaed K. Igarashi(USA),the unique Northamerican that passed the Round 3, is surfing better this year than last one, and already has many fans in our country. So the event continued to the
Quarterfinals.
In the opening heat Adriano de Souza(BRA) overcamed Joel parkinson(AUS), that also surfed well on heavy waves of Itaúna. Right after, in the second heat, the highlight Yago Dora defeated Mick fanning(AUS) the third World Champion in the contest. He had already won J.J. Florence(HAW)and Gabriel.Medina(BRA).In the heat number 3, the goofy "Ace " Adrian Buchan(AUS), surfed very well, on long and heavy waves of Saquarema, overcame Jordy smith(RSA);and in the last heat, a duel of giants between two Australians; Matt wilkinson(AUS) passed to Semifinals over his friend Owen Wright(AUS)than, the contest would be disputed between Brazil and Australia. The Australia surfers had an excelent performance in Itauna beach.
Semifinals.
At opening heat, Adriano de Souza(BRA)2015 World Champion, defeated Yago Dora(BRA) with his manuevers on the lip, accurate with speed, throwing much "water"; Seems that A. de Souza(BRA) calculated the manuevers, and rarely lost a wave or slip on the surfboard. It is worth to point out that Leandro Dora is the coach of both surfers in this heat:his son, Yago Dora; that turns 21, today. And also is the coach of Adriano de Souza(BRA) and was the coach of Mineirinho when was World Champion in 2014. In the second heat, Adrian Buchan (AUS)won another compatriot Matt Wilkinson(AUS) the final was defined. Adriano x Adrian , duel of As.
So the organization left the contest stand by for 30 minutes, as usual, for resting of the surfers. In the final, the conditions were classic, with series of big waves approaching  the beach break, Sea with high and heavy walls. The waves broke to the left. This contest in Saquarema, certainly was the most beautiful and high level surfing contest I had seen so far.In the final of the heat, Adriano de Souza(BRA)was  leading of the heat, and Adrian Buchan(AUS)  had the priority, so choose a good wave, and last small time on floating to take the wall of the wave. He scored 8.03 and needed 8.44, so Adriano de Souza(BRA) was the Champion in Saquarema, in the best heat of the contest at my opinion; Adriano de Souza won in Brazil by the second time; - the first time was in Arpoador Beach in 2011, against the Australian Taj Burrow-check the blog post -a Tribute to great surfer Taj Burrow(AUS),in  my first event in Rio de Janeiro.-
In Saquarema, Itaúna Beach was a great dispute on the water, with the shore so crowded. It was a cloudy day, the Sun showed sometimes witn a  strong wind in the Final..

--------------

The competition for the 2017 WORLD TITLE

After the contest in Saquarema, with early defeat of J.J. Florence(HAW), that stays leader with Yellow jersey, the CT Championship Tour is balanced, there are three edge surfers in the second position: Adriano de Souza(BRA), Jordy Smith(RSA)and Owen Wright(AUS); Four top surfers of different countries fighting for the title of the season. I would like to comment that the participation of Yago Dora(BRA) in  Oi Rio Pro, in Itaúna Beach,  with his accurate techical manuevers, looked like "skating". Yago also is a skater and plays soccer, stopped the Hawaiian J.J. Florenche(HAW) that had a sprint with more than 10,000 points over the second place . He had balanced a little the World Circuit, as the waves of Itaúna, with power. The next event is the 5th of the season. It will be in Fiji, in the middle of the year.Gabriel Medina(BRA) also surfed well in Itauna, perhaps with some pressure, that I already wrote may disturb his performance.Seems that Gabriel Medina(BRA) surfs much better overseas, and is defeding champion in Fiji. In the last seasons-2015 and 2016, Gabriel Medina(BRA) did a kind of recovery campaign, however, in 2014, he already arrived in Brazil with yellow jersey. Let's wait because Gabriel Medina(BRA)is always a dangerous surfer that is able to change the things in seconds, or in last wave as in Pipeline, when defeated Mick Fanning(AUS)in the Semifinals, helping Adriano de Souza(BRA)to conquer the World Title. Gabriel Medina(BRA)was  the first Brazilian surfer to be World Champion of Surfing in 2014, and the first to clinch the glamorous and tradition title of theTriple Crown in Hawaii in 2015

 Special Show of Mineirinho

An event that drove us to the golden days of Saquarema of the 70's, at the time of the festivals. The city breathed surf for 10 days and it was all very beautiful. Good waves enthusiastic and polite fans, party in the city and Brazilians were surfing very well, especially Adriano de Souza, Mineirinho, the great winner of the Brazilian stage of the World Tour. He won all the heats, was a Champion in an uncontestable way and entered in fact into the fight for World Title.

Mineirinho, at my opinion, is a special athlete, obstinated, focused, humble and knows how to compete like no one else. He knows to do exactly what the judges want to see. Mineirinho, pride of Brazilians!

Next, the highlight was the absence of Kelly Slater, who claimed back pain. After was Yago Dora to pass through the difficult Trial of the event, for tracking his way in the main competition.

Yago, no doubt, was the great surprise in Itaúna. He overcame World Champion John John Florence masterfully in the Round 3, then defeated Gabriel Medina in the  Round 5, which was perhaps the best "heat" of the event. In the Quarterfinals passed by the Australian Mick Fanning, when it took the fans to the delirium, he was defeatre only in the Semifinal for Mineirinho. Yago shows that he will give what to say yet. It was only the beginning of its trajectory.
The negative highlight of Brazil was the early defeat of Filipe Toledo in the Round 3 of the competition for American Kanoa Igarashi. The surfer did interference in the opening wave of the heat and discounted his anger in the judges when trying to invade the area destined and reserved to them inside the structure.Filipe apologized for his behavior but received a fine from WSL and is suspended from the next stage, in Fiji.

"BRAZUCA"(Brazilian) DUEL
Mineirinho was who stopped the young Yago Dora, 21 years, in the Semifinals

Yago also shines, on a classic day of waves

The conditions of the Sea in Saquarema during almost all the championship were good, that serves to remove the ghost of the last editions of the Brazilian stage, in Postinho, in Barra, when the Sea did not help. Yesterday the official foreign broadcast of the Event, which is usually more critical with the Brazilian waves, praised the conditions of the Sea. Deputy champion, Adrian Buchan also liked what he saw:

- The level of surfing shown in these ten days was incredible and this showed to the world that Brazil has high waves too, impressive surfers and a fantastic crowd. Brazilians are the ones who enjoy the most about beach culture, and  I am already looking forward to coming back here next year.

Besides the  victory of Adriano, the highlight of the championship was Yago Dora, who turns 21 years today. The young Brazilian entered the championship after winning the Trial and defeated no less than three World champions: John John Florence, Gabriel Medina, and Mick Fanning. All three have five World titles. Yago was only stopped by Adriano de Souza, in the Semifinals, but left Saquarema with the moral in the heights.

The bi of Mineirinho

Saquarema, RJ
The afternoon of yesterday  was of party in Itaúna beach, site of the Brazilian stage of the World Circuit of  Surfing. Adriano de Souza, the Mineirinho, defeated the Australian Adrian Buchan and clinched the CT of Saquarema with property. World Champion in 2015, the Brazilian won the highest score of the decision: 9.80. At the final whistle, he added 17.63 to 17.23 of Buchan. This is the second time that Adriano wins the Brazilian stage - the first was in 2011, in the waves of Barra. The victory left the Brazilian tied with the Australian Owen Wright and the South African Jordy Smith in the vice leader of the Ranking, just behind to the Hawaiian John John Florence, who follows the leader  Mineirinho was received on the podium by  shouting of the fans "the champion is back, the champion is back " - the last stage he won was the traditional Pipe Masters in Hawaii in 2015. Last year he finished in 11th place, without to dispute a final at any stage.
"I have not felt the taste of the podium since December 2015 and I worked a lot," said an affected Adriano, with the Brazilian flag in his hand:

-This is an athlete's journey, to dedicate himself and not reach his goals. But never giving up, I always believed and showed great determination even in the most difficult moments. I think this shows how our country is, that even when living in difficulty, we go out every day to work with a smile on our faces and carrying this flag on our chest.

The flag had already paraded with Mineirinho while he was still on the water, driven by a jet ski, at the end of tense Final. Hitchhiking in the watercraft, he passed along the public on a kind of Olympic lap of the surf.

The conquest had an epic arena of competition. Since the start of the championship, on the 9th, Saquarema had not yet shown its full potential. The disputes occurred in good waves, but only
yesterday the "Itaúna Express" worked:  big, heavy, and long wave that breaks to the left.

-Two moments of celebration of Mineirinho: in and out of the water
