THE AUSTRALIANS SURFERS INJURED IN PIPELINE OVERVIWEW by surfworldtour.blogspot - Paulo Piqueres -
--------------------------------------------------
2008 - THE FIRST - HANG LOOSE WCT BRASIL - October 28th / November 5th, 2008
My debut in WCTs was in 2008, in Praia da Vila, Imbituba-Santa Catarina.
Bede Durbidge(AUS) won that stage over Jeremy Flores(FRA).
Bede Durbidge(AUS)
I had luck because I took my first photo of a Champion of the stage.
Owen Wright(AUS)was not in the elite of Surfing.
---------------
2009 - THE GIFT - Hang Loose Pro 2009 Santa Catarina June 27th/July 5th,2009
My second WCT was in Praia da Vila again, the great champion Kelly Slater(USA) won that stage over Adriano de Souza(BRA) exactly on birthday -July 3rd.
I bought a T-shirt and a cap of the event for myself, and became so happy...
The lucky cap, I only use in the stages of World Circuit of surfing, and I will always wear it...
Bede Durbidge(AUS)always so nice let me took a photo of him.
Owen Wright(AUS)was still not in the World Circuit of Surfing.
---------------
2010 - THE PASSION - BILLABONG PRO 2010 - Santa catarina Brazil -Imbituba - April 23rd/May2nd,2010
In my third WCT, the event was sponsored by Billabong, and in that stage Kelly Slater(USA) was defeated in the final by Jadson Andre(BRA).
I took a photo of Kelly Slater(USA)in the guard-rails, with his focused eyes in lineup.
Later on, I guess in November of 2013, that photo was in the first page of the site waves.com, one of the best surfing sites in Brazil.
Finally in this stage I knew Owen Wright(AUS), as Bede Durbidge(AUS)he so nice with everybody. I took many photos of him, in Praia da Vila, where was easier to work than in Rio de Janeiro beaches.
He surfed very well, and reached the Semifinals.
Semifinals
heat 2
K. Slater(USA) 13.50 x 10.56 O. Wright(AUS)
The children loved Owen Wright(AUS)style, and they cheered for him!!!
Owen, Owen, Owen,....
I taught English Language in High School for 12 years, I do not know "how" but the children said corretly his name: OWEN, which is a different name for us in Brazil.
In Praia da Vila beach was so different, the beach is just for surfing...There is no traffic, noise, around, and the waves are amazing.
The entrance for surfing is close to the cliffs, it is so nice..
Owen Wright(AUS)
Bede Durbidge(AUS) with tha fans.
2011 - The TRANSITION -BILLABONG RIO PRO - May 11/22th, 2011
The stage moved to Rio de Janeiro.Than I bought airplane ticket, because is farway 940 miles from Porto Alegre,Rio Grande do Sul, the Southern state in Brazil. I was a quite lost in this huge town, Rio de Janeiro, even in WCT event. The first week was off the competition, only Women's - for the first time in Brazil.
Anyway, I went to the beach in Barra da Tijuca-Posto 4, and took photos of Bede Durbidge(AUS) and Owen Wright(AUS) both, after a surfing session.
Owen Wright(AUS)reached to Quarterfinals in this stage, as follows:
heat 4
Adriano de Souza(BRA)14.23 x 14.10 Owen Wrigth(AUS)
Adriano de Souza(BRA) won this stage over Taj Burrow(AUS), one of the surfers in current elite of surfing, that won more events in Brazil.
2012 -THE BEST -BILLABONG RIO PRO - May 9th/20th, 2012
This year I prepared myself better, find a better place to stay in Rio de Janeiro. I did myself a banner of the blog and took some photos in Arpoador beach, and in Barra da Tijuca (the stage moved to Posto 2 -Postinho).I also visited Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Pontal, Macumba, and "Prainha" beaches .Prainha beach is very beautiful, it seems a paradise. I was feeling more comfortable in the WCT too.
Unfortunately on this season in Brazil, Owen Wright(AUS)did not advanced over the Round 3
heat 1
Tiago Pires(POR) 10.40 x 6.40 Owen Wright(AUS)
OWEN WRIGHT(AUS)
Barra da Tijuca - Postinho - Rio de Janeiro - Brazil
Arpoador Beach - Rio de Janeiro - Brazil
2013 THE SITE BILLABONG RIO PRO 2013
I created the site surfworldtour.com, registered the domain. I did myself the banner. But the site was just for a while on the Internet.. I did not like the lay out, but I continued to work in the blog. Writing scripts in HTML language to the web. Sites are more difficult to deal with, because I have to sent the files to the server, and I did not have so experience. Sometimes the uploading is unstable though. My site files have many images.
Owen Wright(AUS)did not come to the stage in Brazil -unfortunatelly he was injured in the season.
2014 THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS BILLABONG RIO PRO 2014
In my 4th WCT in Rio de Janeiro, Owen Wright(AUS)competed.
The stage was -Samsung Galaxy Championship Tour/ASP -Association of Surfing Professionals.
Samsung promoted an Interview on the beach with Australian surfers Owen Wrigth(AUS) Adam Melling(AUS), Dion Atkinson(AUS), Mick Fanning(AUS), Bede Durbidge(AUS). At the interview, the Australian surfers gave theirs autographs on the posters of the event to fans. I said - Hi ! to the Australian surfers.
I keep it carefully in my room at my house in RS-Brazil, I have a private Surf Bar only for my friends,at basement of my house. At Surf Bar, there many posters of the surf events since 2006, after my father dead and I my life turned away...
Owen Wright(AUS)surf well and reached the Round 5, but was defeated by F. Toledo(BRA)
2015 the biggest BILLABONG RIO PRO
In this stage, Owen Wright(AUS) surfed very well, in Barra da Tijuca beach, and I took many photos of him on the shore, before competing.
After five events in Rio de Janeiro, I learned many things, I already know some people, professional photographers, the legend, Mr. Sebastian Rojas.I have more experience now. I like to take photos of the surfers on the shore, when they are going or leaving the water. But I never perturbed them at the concentration or anything else.
Owen Wright(AUS) surfed very well the heavey waves of Postinho -Barra da Tijuca -Rio de Janeiro-Brazil, but was defeated at Quarterfinals by his compatriot Matt Wilkinson(AUS)
Bede Durbidge(AUS)surfed very well with edge manuevers on the heavy waves of Postinho and went to Final, against Filipe Toledo(BRA)
Filipe Toledo(BRA)defeated Bede Durbidge in this stage in Rio de Janeiro.
2015 Billabong Pipe Masters Hawaii
I was happy because Owen Wright(AUS)had some chances to be the Champion this year despite to need some combination of results.
When I see the Round 1, I realized that Owen was out of competition, and replaced by Mason Ho(HAW)so I thought to myself: Something should be happened with Owen Wrigh(AUS)otherwise he would be in the heat 2. But only on Friday, I read the News in Rio de Janeiros papers about the accident with the Australian surfer.
At this famous stage, I am doing Versions everydays from the papers of Rio de Janeiro: O Globo, Extra, Lance; TV programs: Jornal Nacional -Rede Globo -Rio de Janeiro-Brazil, and some related articles from the Intenet.
I became so upset after know about Owen Wrigth(AUS)accident before the stage in a surfing session: and Bede Durbidge(AUS)in the heat 2 of Round 3. But they would be recovered soon for sure, both are tough guys.
The Australians surfers are so admired in Brazil, and for "sure" the surfing fans wish theirs prompt recuperation, including the children of Imbituba/Santa Catarina that loved them.
I "from heart", wish to BEDE DURBIDGE(AUS) and OWEN WRIGHT(AUS)a fast recovery, and back stronger to the next season in 2016.
