"Observations from Saquarema"

Is " going on" in Saquarema (RJ), in Itaúna Beach, the fourth Stage of the World Surfing of Circuit. The competition has already started with good waves on the first day of the waiting window. Sea with waves of about 1.5m and favorable wind helped in the performance of the athletes.

We missed Kelly Slater, 11 times World Champion. Besides being a great attraction for the event, he surfed so well and might surprise. Kelly is a show of surfing.

The first heat of the day had Gabriel Medina facing Nat Young, from the United States, and the Hawaiian Ezekiel Lau. The Brazilian well tried, risked some aerials of frontside, but finally finished in second place and went to the Recap. The American Nat Young advanced straight to the Round 3.

By tha way, in the second heat of the Round 1, 100% Brazilian duel. Adriano de Souza, the Mineirinho, Wiggolly Dantas and Jadson Andre faced themselves.Mineirinho won and is classified to  the Round 3.

Besides Adriano de Souza, another Brazilians advanced straight to the Round 3: Ian Gouveia, turned the heat in the final minutes against the Australians Ace buchan and Matt Wilkinson; and Felipe Toledo, one of the highlights of the day, that competed against the Australian Ethan Ewing and the Portuguese Frederico Morais.

On Wednesday, only the first four heats of the Round 2 went to the water. Yago Dora, another highlight of the event so far, surfed very well and turned the heat in the final minutes over the fifth place of the Ranking, the American Kolohe Andino, in the opening heat of the day. After, Bino Lopes went to the water, but was finally defeated by Australian Owen Wright.

In the Round 3, Gabriel Medina had a hard duel with Jessé Mendes. Medina won, and took the place to the Round 3. The Southwest wind has risen and the competition was stopped for the day.

Yesterday, as already forecasted, the Sea was very bad, with strong Southwest wind in the morning and small waves, which let the Organization of the Brazilian stage to determine day off.

Today, at 6:45 am, a new call occurs. It is forecast good conditions of waves to the event in this this weekend.
Aloha and good waves!

Yago Dora with his father and coach, Leandro Dora, in the Brazilian stage of the World Circuit
An extra look at competitions
From parents to ex-athletes, coaches gain space in the Circuit. Postponed yesterday, Saquarema stage should start again today

Yago Dora paddled with  the American kolohe Andino so behind, looking for a wave that could guarantee the victory. In the structure of the event, Leandro Dora realized that a series of waves was approaching  on the left of where Yago was. Using a surfboard, he waved to the surfer paddles to the side and escapes from the mark of his opponent. This was decisive for Yago to advance the third Round.
Leandro Dora is  father and coach of Yago, and this was just one example of how coaches are increasingly gaining more space in a sport until very recently considered totally individual.
Like Leandro, some are fathers of the athletes, like Ricardo Toledo, father of Filipe, and Charles Saldanha, stepfather of Gabriel Medina. Most are former professional surfers, including  with passage through the World Circuit, such as the Australians Jake Paterson and Glenn Hall and the American Chris Gallagher. The Hawaiian Ross Williams also competed for many years in the CT, and had been working as a broadcaster until, the beginning of this year, to change the job and become coach of John John Florence. The psychological side is something worked by Leandro Dora, who, in addition to Yago, trains Adriano de Souza and the Hawaiian Tatiana Weston-Webb:-I think it is even small my  interference in the technical side. The important thing is to give confidence and tranquility.
Leandro Dora also prefers to work on a strategy before the heat and does not interfere during the contest.Yesterday, the CT of Saquarema was postponed due to the weak conditions of the sea. The forecast is  that the championship will start again today, from  7am.

>SAQUAREMA,RJ - December of 2015.Candidate to the World Title, Owen Wright(AUS) is hit by a series of heavy waves in Pipeline, in Hawaii, while is training to the last stage of that year. The Australian leaves the Sea and goes to rest in the house where is staying. Wakes up, desoriented, with difficulties to breath, and is taken to the hospital, where is diagnosed with a brain concussion. There began a drama that would last 15 months of many uncertainties and would finish with one of the greatest recoveries of the history of the sport.

The surfer with 27 years came back to compete in last March, in the first Stage of the Circuit, in Gold Coast, in an event as a screenplay of movie. He was passing heat by heat till defeat his compatriot Matt Wilkinson in the Final.Left the water crying, carried by his brother and sister, the current World Champion Tyler Wright, and acclaimed by the public and competitors. A victory that looked like more a fairy tale. Yesterday, he defeated the Brazilian Bino Lopes in the Recap and is the Round 3 of CT of Saquarema.

-It was so nice that victory in Gold Coast. It was the greatest moment of my career - remembers Owen, that says that entered in that Championship with modest expectations:

-I want only stand up and make some manuevers, you Know? A snap here, another there. I did not wait to come back so well.

Third in the Ranking, he competes in the top, but guarantees that a possible title is the last thing that goes through his mind:

-I want only to be well and surf well. Just this.

The World of Surfing awaited anxious for returning of Owen, that stayed  away of the spotlights during the recovery.

-In many moments I thought that I will not be back. It was a roller coaster of emotions. The injury was in the head. I am still working, doing physiotherapy every days. The expectation is to be better from the middle of the year - he explains.

Medina and Yago advance to the third Round
The sea dropped and the wind did not help on the second day of the Brazilian stage, yesterday, in Saquarema, taking the Organization to finish the disputes after the fourth heat of the Recap of the Men's . But it was enough for the Brazilians Gabriel Medina and Yago Dora, and the Australians Owen Wright and Matt Wilkinson  guaranteed themselves in the third Round.

The day began with Yago facing Kolohe Andino: he got a 9.10 in a beautiful aerial (repeating the debut) but needed a 4.13 to pass the Round. A few minutes of the end, the score came: 5.17.

The heat of Medina was the third of the day, when the wind increased, got worse the formation of the waves. The contest against the also Brazilian Jessé Mendes was tense and fierce. Medina took the initiative, but it did not go well. Jessé took advantage and scored first. But Medina was able to turn even in the middle of the heat and held the advantage  till to the end.

Today, there is a call to 6:45 am. But the forecast is that the sea will drop more. Disputes should only come back tomorrow.
