Searching for the 2018 World Championship of Surfing title by Paulo Piqueres surfworldtour.blogspot.com
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Firstly the World Circuit of Surfing by WSL - World Surf League in its 4th stop, arrived in Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with two leaders of the Jeep Leaderboard Ranking: the Australian J. Wilson(AUS) 3rd position in the last season of the elite of World Surfing; and the Brazilian I. Ferreira(BRA)23rd position one. J. Wilson(AUS) reached the Semifinals of the event - CT#4, but was defeated by the great "highlight" F. Toledo(BRA)10th position in 2017 final Ranking. J. Wilson(AUS)kept his position in the top of the Ranking, and will wear the Yellow Jersey in Keramas beach, Bali, Indonesia; the 2018 OI RIO PRO champion F. Toledo(BRA)reached the second position in the Ranking with the small difference of 1,340 points behind the leader after the Brazilian event, and I. Ferreira(BRA) felt down to the third position. The Brazilian surfer was defeated prematurely by the 2017 highlight, Y. Dora(BRA)in the Round 3.
The talentous G. Medina(BRA)surfer of Maresias beach, São Sebastião(SP)was defeated in the Quarterfinals by the 2018 "highlight" in Saquarema, the rookie W. Carmichael(AUS)however the 2014 World Champion went up in the Ranking from the 7th position to the fourth one. G. Medina(BRA)surfed very well in Saquarema, won the heats in the Round 1, the Round 3 and the Round 4, but did not "find" the waves in the Quarterfinals. For his searching for the second World Champion title, was excellent to keep in the top positions, otherwise he would have to run behind the leaders as in the last season, when he won two events in row, in France and Portugal, and arrived in Pipeline, Hawaii, with less chances to be World Champion by the two-time, and the Hawaiian J.J. Florence clinched by second time in row the World Championship of the elite at home - Hawaiian waters-.
The two-time World Champion J.J. Florence(HAW)is not reaching a good performance in the current season; the Hawaiian was defeated prematurely in Gold Coast (Round 2) and Bells(Round 3)both events in Australia, but will fight in the Round 3 of Margaret River, that was cancelled, that will be disputed after Corona Bali Protected. Anyway is still early, there are eight events yet to be finished. We never may suppose anything about the "great" champions as the two-time World Champion. In the last season who could imagine that G. Medina(BRA)would win two events in row, but the Brazilian surfer "won"(France and Portugal).
The 2015 World Champion, A. de Souza(BRA)surfer of Guarujá(SP)is in the 17th position in the WSL ranking; in this season the World Champion was prematurely out of the competition in Saquarema, when was defeated by I. Gouveia(BRA)in the Round 2;in the last season, A. de Souza(BRA)won all the heats he disputed, and was the great "highlight" in Brazilian event.I. Gouveia(BRA)son of the former surfer F. Gouveia(BRA)surfed very well in Barrinha beach, overcame A. de Souza(BRA) and J. Smith(SAF)in the Round 3; He was the third in the Round 4 in Itaúna beach, in a yellow-green heat, against M. Rodrigues(BRA) and F. Toledo(BRA).
M. Rodrigues(BRA)also surfed very well in Saquarema, overcame M. Wilkinson(AUS)5th in 2017 WSL Ranking in the Round 2;and defeated the Portuguese F. Morais(PRT)in the Round 3, and was defeated in the Quarterfinals by the Yellow jersey J. Wilson(AUS). By other hand, the Hawaiian E. Lau(HAW) also surfed very well in Saquarema with more confidenceand reached his best result in the elite, the Semifinals when was defeated by the "highlight" W. Carmichael(AUS).
The negative surprise in Saquarema was the weak performance of experienced surfers in the World Circuit,as the Australians O. Wright(AUS)6th position in last season; M. Wilkinson(AUS)5th position in 2017 Ranking; A. Buchan(AUS)the vice-champion in 2017 OI RIO PRO; the South African J. Smith(SAF)4th position in 2017 WSL ranking and chmapionof 2013 Billabong Rio Pro in Postinho, Barra da Tijuca;the Tahitian ; M. Bourez(PYF)champion of 2014 Billabong Rio Pro in Rio de Janeiro.
The rookie W. Carmichael(AUS)-the "hightlight" surfed very well in Barrinha and Itaúna beaches; The Australian surferhas a different style, maybe not so fast in the manuevers, but well positioned in the surfboard in the "tubes" for instance, and with excellent reading of the waves. W. Carmichael(AUS)is the 5th position in Jeep Leaderboard Ranking after the event in Brazil. This event was my 11th in Brazil since 2008, I remember in 2015 when the 2008 Hang Loose Pro Santa Catarina champion(my first event in the World Circuit of surfing) B. Durbidge(AUS)disputed the Final against F. Toledo(BRA) in Postinho, Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro; the Australian said in the podium after the the duel on the water, "I am so happy... however I had to face F. Toledo(BRA)..." I guess the same could be said by W. Carmichael(AUS).
Bali
------
The first top surfers will arrived in Bali with conditions to clinch the top of the Jeep Leaderboard Ranking, but J. Wilson(AUS)and F. Toledo(BRA)are a little ahead and mainly the winner of 2018 OI Rio Pro,that is in great "shape" in this season with excellent performance in the manuevers as aerials, tubes, and so on. We can not forget that in 2015 season, F. Toledo(BRA) arrived in Pipeline(read the posts of surfworldtour.blogspot.com), Hawaii with the best conditions to be World Champion, but was defeated by the local M. Ho(HAW). Maybe his time to be World champion is arriving. He is son of the former surfer Ricardo Toledo -Brazilian Champion of Surfing- besides "Filipinho" is father by the second time, just two days before the event in Saquarema, his second son "koa" was born and the surfer dedicated the "win" to his son. He has more experience now besides is living in California, and won the event in Trestles last season. F. Toledo(BRA)disputed six Finals in the World Circuit and won all the "duels" on the water, reaching 100% performance.
So let's wait what will happen in the Corona Bali Protected...
Margaret River
-------------------
Right after the Corona Bali Protected will be restarted the event of Margaret River, Australia that was cancelled due shark activity in the competition area. I just started working with professional surf in 2008 in Hang Loose Pro, in Imbituba, Santa Catarina, but I guess this situation of two events together never happened before in the World Circuit. So will be disputed 20,000 -twenty thousand points in Indonesia. The Margaret River event will be disputed in Uluwatu beach. The Women's event will be restarted in the Quarterfinals;and the Men's in the Round 3. We can not predict the future, however for instance a surfer in the10th position in the current Jeep Leaderboard Ranking can leave Indonesia in the top of Ranking, with the Yellow Jersey in the luggage???
Let's wait for...

The flight of Filipinho
Brazilian gives show in Saquarema, wins the stage of World Circuit and jumps to the second position in the Ranking
Renato de Alexandrino
renato.alexandrino@oglobo.com.br
"Fly as a butterfly, sting as a bee". The phrase was coined by the boxer Muhammad ali in 1964 would fall as a glove for what Filipinho presented in Saquarema. Taking off with lightness and synchrony to hit his aerials, and attacking with strength the wall of the wave when necessary, the surfer of São Paulo(SP)23 years old won yesterday the Brazilian stage of World Circuit of Surfing. And with leftovers. After taking a fright in the Round 3, when almost lost to the Hawaiian Keanu Asing, Filipinho hit the fifth gear and did not look back anymore. In the rights tubular waves of Barrinha, alternative structure and that had better conditions to host the championship, was overcoming victims along the way.
He overcame the American Kolohe Andino in the Quarterfinals; did not give chance to the leader of Ranking, the Australian Julian Wilson, in the Semifinals; and defeated also the Australian Wade Carmichael in the Final with right to a long and perfect tube that scored 9.93. Received on the beach by a crowd in apotheosis and carried on his shoulders as he came out from the water, the surfer did not hold the tears when talked about the win, dedicated to his son Koa, who was born two days before the start of the event.
-This is Brazil. This all energy is exciting, exclaimed, crying: It is very good to be at home.
It was the second win of Filipinho in Brazil - the other was in 2015, when the championship was held in Postinho, in Rio de Janeiro - and the sixth in stages of CT. The surfer of São Paulo(SP)never lost a final in the World Circuit.
-It is the last chance that you have, it is time of great show. This is what I put in my mind, that I have to go there and do my best - said him, that flew from ninth position to the second position in the Ranking.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is Champion!
Filipe Toledo took a shower of beer of Wade Carmichael
Circuit follows to the Indonesia
Other three Brazilians arrived to the final day of disputes in CT of Saquarema, each one in a heat of the Quarterfinals, what let the crowd cheering for the Semifinals formed by Brazilians. But they did not match with the opponents.
Michael Rodrigues surfed well against Julian Wilson, however lost for little on a mistake that should have taken his sleep at night when let the Australian turn the heat when he had the priority. Gabriel Medina had a weak performance against Wade Carmichael, scoring only 3.63. Yago Dora did not surf well either, eliminated by the Hawaiian Ezekiel Lau.
In the second position of Ranking, Filipinho is just over a thousand points behind the leader JulianWilson. Italo Ferreira fell to the third, and Medina is the fourth position.
The World Circuit travels now to Indonesia, with a dispute of a stage and an half in sequence. First will be disputed, in the beginning of June, the Bali Pro, in the waves of Keramas.
Right after the WSL, will complete the CT of Margaret River, that was cancelled on last month by the shark activity in the championship area, in Western Australia. The event will restart in the waves of Uluwatu, in Bali, from where it stopped by, in the Round 3 in Men's competition, and in the Quarterfinals in Women's one.

High waves in Saquarema
Saquarema is really blessed. The Brazilian stage of World Circuit started in epic way in Maracanã of Brazilian surf, in the last Friday. And historic, since for the first time one CT happened in the peak of Barrinha. Were days of high waves. The powerful right ran at full steam and put to the test the best surfers of the world. After two days in a row in Barrinha, the championship returned to the main structure, for the lefts of Itaúna point, that broke with high waves and provided a real show of surfing. And was in the scenario that the Women's championship was finalized, on Wednesday.
From the Round 3 till the Finals, the girls dueled in great conditions. Silvana Lima surfed very well, and scored the best grade and best sum of all the event. The now Brazilian Tatiana Weston-Webb, that eliminated Silvana in the Quarterfinals, finished the competition in 3rd. Who took the best was the six-time World Champion Stephanie Gilmore, that now opened up even more the advantage in leadership of Women's Ranking. In the Final, the Australian defeated the American Lakey Peterson, current second position.
The Men's dispute should restart with the Quarterfinals and finished still today, probably in the rights of Barrinha. We may have for the first time in the history four Brazilians in the Semifinals of an event of CT. This because we have a "brazuca" in the dispute of each one of the four heats of Quarterfinals. Filipe Toledo, Gabriel Medina, Michael Rodrigues and Yago Dora are our representatives, and the crowd will be great. Besides the show of surfing, of high waves, the weather in is incredible. A positive energy that is felt immediately by those who pass the main street of Itaúna. The town breathes surf 24 hours by day and has been amazing to witness all this. I hope Brazil wins. Aloha and good waves!

Filipinho is "10"

Filipe Toledo showed that he is not for kidding even. Considered one of the favorites to the top places in the podium in the CT of Saquarema, the surfer of São Paulo(SP) received yesterday the first grade 10 of the event when passed to the Quarterfinals. Besides him, Gabriel Medina, Yago Dora and Michael Rodrigues also advanced. The forecast for today is of small waves, and the championship may be finalized tomorrow or on Saturday, already with bigger waves.
Filipinho dominated the Brazilian heat, against Michael and Ian Gouveia, showing a strong and fast surf in the backside(from back to the wave)in the lefts of Itaúna. Already in the end of the heat, with the win almost guaranteed, hitted a high aerial and with perfect rotation for taking the grade 10.
-In that time, I was so nervous yet, afraid of Ian and Michael, because are two surfers with great talent. But that wave came and I was in the right place and in the right time - said Filipinho.
For the first time in the history of Circuit a stage may have four Brazilians disputing the Semifinals.
The first heat of Quarterfinals will be between Filipe and the American Kolohe Andino. The surfer of Ceará(CE)faces the Australian Julian Wilson, leader of the Ranking. Medina, that did the party of crowd with his win in the Round 4, faces the Australian Wade Carmichael. And the surfer of Santa Catarina(SC)Yago, that reached the Semifinals in Saquarema in the last year, faces the Hawaiian Ezekiel Lau.
The surprise of yesterday was the elimination of the Hawaiian John John Florence. The two-time World Champion was behind of Yago and Carmichael, and finished the event in ninth position. After four stages, the Hawaiian collects weak results, staying far of fighting for the third World Championship.
