Yago Dora surfed very well in the Round 1 of the Brazilian stage of the World Circuit and almost defeated the current World Champion

Nice to meet you, Yago Dora

Brazilian young has a lot of prestige in the international scenario, but is still unknown to the Brazilian public
Victor Costa
victor.costa@oglobo.com.br

Dora, who turns 21 years on the next 18th day, is son of Leandro Dora, coach of Adriano de Souza in the World Title of 2015. A few years ago, his name was successful in specialized sites around the world. In Brazil, however, it is still unknown to the general public. But, this scenario is changing. Yesterday, in his first participation in the world elite, he was 0.03 of defeating the Hawaiian John John Florence in the Round 1 of the Brazilian stage of the World Circuit in Saquarema (RJ).

Yago entered the competition by winning the Trial. And soon in its first heat in the elite faced the current World Champion and leader of the Ranking.

-I know Yago. I knew he would hit an aerial like this-said the Hawaiian surfer about the maneuver that scored 9.27 to the Brazilian.

The debut of Yago impressed by his coolness. While John John surfed wave after wave, he did not feel the pressure and waited calmly for his opportunity. Despite this, he did not get to show the best of his repertoire, and the incredible aerial, the highest score of the heat, left the feeling that he would have guaranteed the place to Round 3 if he had made better choices.

Today, Yago opens the Recap against the American Kolohe Andino. Yesterday, only three Brazilians - Filipe Toledo, Adriano de Souza and Ian Gouveia - advanced to the Round 3. Gabriel Medina, Wiggoly Dantas, Jadson Andre, Jessé Mendes, Miguel Pupo, Yago Dora, Bino Lopes and Caio Ibelli will also have to dispute The Recap.

Almost won: Dora lost the heat to John John by 14.67 points to 14.64

Medina:day of the Recap

Medina seeks to remain alive in Saquarema

Among the duels of today, one calls more attention: Gabriel Medina against Jessé Mendes. The two dominated the Brazilian Amateur Circuit in the base categories.

-From the age of 11 to 14 years old we faced ourselves many times. There were Amateur championships almost every week. But many things have changed since then, "said Jesse, 23 years old, the same age as Medina.

In the base categories, Jesse was more popular. Today, he avoids comparisons with the 2014 World Champion. The two faced themselves for the last time in the second stage of this season in Margaret River, Australia. Jesse won, but it was a heat with three surfers.

The other heats of the Recap will be: O. Wright(AUS) x B. Lopes(BRA);M. Wilkinson(AUS) x L. Fioravanti(ITA); M. Bourez(PYF) x J. Andre(BRA); S. Zietz(HAW) x E. Ewing(AUS); Caio Ibelli(BRA) x J. Duru(FRA); C. Coffin(USA) x B. Durbidge(AUS); C. O'Leary(AUS) x S. Kennedy(AUS); A. Buchan(AUS) x M. Pupo(BRA); F. Morais(POR) x J. Freestone(AUS); E. Lau(HAW) x W. Dantas(BRA).

"Everybody against John John"
Leader of the season of World Circuit of Surfing, the Hawaiian is the men to be defeated in Brazilian stage in Saquarema
Renato de Alexandrino and
Victor Costa
esporteglb@globo.com.br

>SAQUAREMA, RJ - He is the guy to be defeated. And not only because is the current World Champion. With an amazing beginning of year, the Hawaiian John John Florence far ahead in the leadership of Ranking, arriving in Saquarema with comfortable four thousand points of advantage over the deputy leaders Jordy Smith(South Africa)and Owen Wright(Australia).Fourth stop of World Circuit, the Brazilian stage starts today, from 7:00 am, in Itaúna beach, in Saquarema.

John John began 2017 without to give any sign of suffering an even understandable "title hangover" that occurred with the Brazilians Gabriel Medina and Adriano de Souza, for instance, in the following years related to Championships that both clinched.

Champion in 2016, the Hawaiian arrived in Australia determined to show that not won for case. He was third in Gold Coast, won in Margaret River and returned to be third in Bells Beach. With this, arrives in Saquarema with 23 thousand points in the Ranking.

-This is my best beginning of year. It is very good, but is still early to think about anything. I am competing without pressure and trying to improve at each stage - said John John.

Sympathetic and relaxed, the Hawaiian does not care with strong pursuit that is suffering in the Championship.

-I feel confortable this way. I like to have the yellow jersey(reserved to the leader of Ranking, I am learning to be with it.

Deputy leader of Ranking, together with Owen Wright, the South African Jordy Smith is so happy by the victory in Bells and wants to dethrone the Hawaiian.

This is my best  beginning of year. It is very good but is still early to think about anything.

Americano Kelly Slater is doubt
The stage of Brazil live moments of apprehension in the eve of its beginning. The biggest star of the sport and 11 times World Champion, Kelly Slater still is doubt to the competition.
The American still did not arrive to Saquarema and the World Surf League still waits for a contact of him to confirm or not his participation. Slater was scaled to a press conference that occurred yesterday.First surfer of the list of replacements, the Brazilian Bino Lopes is already on alert to a possible entry in the championship.
According to the World Surf League, Kelly Slater may even miss the Round 1 and compete only in the recap. He is scaled in the tenth heat against the Americans Conner Coffin and Kanoa Igarashi.
The  fourth stage of the World Circuit of Surfing starts today, around 7:00 am. The forecast is of good waves for the first day of the window.

Searching a place in the Sun

CT of Rio starts today, in Saquarema, with the Trial: four Brazilians dispute for the last Wild Card for the event.

Renato de Alexandrino
renato.alexandrino@oglogo.com.br

Even before the best surfers of the World enter in action, tomorrow, in Saquarema, the Oi Rio Pro will already have a high level competition. Today, at 10:00 am, a Trial with four surfers will define the last Wild Card to the fourth stage of the Championship Tour. And the heat mixes names with history in the Circuit and promises of Brazilian surfing: Raoni Monteiro, Lucas Silveira, Lucas Chumbo and Yago Dora.

Raoni, at 35 years old, disputed eight seasons in the World elite. In the middle of 2015, was caught in a antidoping test and suspended by WSL for 20 months. After disputed some national competitions, the local of Saquarema wants to take advantage of his knowledge of waves of Itauna to receive the Wild Card.

-I will surf at home, joyful and without pressure, however I want to win the heat, of course. I am calm and with good surfboards. It is a great chance of participating of the main event. It will be nice to review the people again.

Another surfer of Saquarema,  will also try his place, even for just a stage, in the elite of surfing. Lucas Chumbo at 21 years old, has become known as big rider. He was indicated recently in three categories in the  Big Wave Awards and dreams to be World Champion of Big Waves, but wants to show that is able to shine in the "marolas"-small waves.
-I trained a lot in California. I am so prepared and much anxious. My dream is one day to enter in the CT.  If I pass  the Trial, I will feel a little taste of this.

The other two surfers of the Trial are the surfer of Rio de Janeiro, who lives in Florianópolis Lucas Silveira, at 21 years old, that already was Junior World Champion, and the surfer of Santa Catarina Yago Dora, at 20. Both are trained by Leandro Dora, father of Yago and coach of Adriano de Souza too, and they usually  surf together.
