SEARCHING THE PERFECT SEASON
Medina and Filipinho arrive in Pipeline in the fight by the World Title in a year
of protagonism of Brazil in surfing
Ohana Constante
ohana.constante@zerohora.com.br
Need only the crowning of Gabriel Medina or Filipe Toledo for the Brazilian surf
close with all honors an historical season. In the year that overcame the traditional
countries when showed for the first time, the biggest number of surfers in the elite -
11 Brazilians, against eight Australians and six Americans - and won eight of 10 stages
of World Circuit till now, the country is approaching the third World Title.
First Brazilian that arrived to the top, in 2014, the favorite Medina only depends of
his performance in the stage of Hawaii, that starts on this Saturday, to clinch the
Bichampionship(see the scenarios in the board at right side). Searching an original
conquest, Filipinho has to win the event of Pipeline or at least to reach the Final -
and cheers for his compatriot goes at most to the Semifinals. Julian Wilson is the
intruder in the decision on the mitic tubes of Hawaiian North Shore: draw with
Toledo in 2nd place in the Ranking of CT, the Australian also dreams with the first
World title in his career.
Even if Wilson destroys the party of two surfers of São Paulo, the fact is that the
balance of 2018 alreday is positive for the Brazilian surfers.
-We already had very good moments, however with no doubts this is being the best
that everybody dreamed one day. I always imagined that one day Brazil had a
World Champion, but not having an attach as is reaching now. It is beyond we
imagined, affirms Fábio Gouveia from Paraíba, first Brazilian to win a stage in
Hawaii.
At the evaluation of Teco Padaratz of Santa Catarina, 2 times World Champion of QS
(accessing division to the elite), Medina has everything to leave Hawaii with
the trophy of Champion.
-In this year, who was ahead of the others was Gabriel by consistence of the
results. He is the great favorite to clinch the title, also because is one
of the best in Pipeline. If we check the Statistics, Julian Wilson is very good,
but Gabriel only depends of himself - analises the former surfer, one of the icons of
nowadays generation.
The condictions of the Sea are very important for figure out the chances of each
surfer. Pipeline is famous by big waves and tubes, formed over a reef break in the
North of Island of Oahu. But the point also has weak days. Even being the best time
of Hawaiian season, exists a light difference of quality of these waves, depending
maninly of direction of swell and the wind.
The analyse is simple. On the "good" days in Pipe with tube waves of 10 to 15 feet
(3,0 m to 4,5 m)Medina and Wilson starts in advantage. However in "bad" days, with
small Sea and weak, Filipinho takes a better performance. With a many styles of
manuevers and aerials, the surfer of São Paulo may take advantage of the situation.
There is no win still. Gabriel trains a lot in Hawaii, as Julian, are two guys
that are always in that wave when go there. Of the three Filipe is the one that
surfs less that wave. But everything may happen, still more if the Sea would be
favorable to Filipe, with smaller waves- says Gouveia.
