Historical Record of Brazilians
Starts today, in Saquarema, our "Maracanã" of surfing, the 4th stage of World Circuit, organized by WSL. By the second consecutive year, the iconic Lake Region receives the event. Only that, this time, a fact calls the attention: we will have a historical record of Brazilians athletes in the same championship. Will be 14. That's right: 14 of 32 participants are Brazilians. And this number only in the Men's competition. In the Women's, besides of Silvana Lima, now we have Tatiana Weston-Webb(photo)representing for the first time the green and yellow flag. That is, a total of 16 Brazilians will be defending our colors.
In the Men's, besides of 11 names already known that are part of the elite of surfing in 2018, we will have Wiggolly Dantas and Miguel Pupo, Wild Cards of WSL, replacing Kelly Slater(USA) and Joel Parkinson(AUS); Alejo Muniz, that received the Wild Card for being the leader of QS Ranking.(Qualifying Series):and Deivid Silva, that conquered the position for winning the local trials yesterday.
The Brazilian team come very strong. In my view, we have the three great favorites of this stage: Ítalo Ferreira, current leader of CT; Gabriel Medina; and Filipe Toledo.
Mainly for the forecast, which indicates smaller waves. We will hardly have that Saquarema express (famous left long and maneuverable, which only shows up on big days). That's why, these three become even stronger as title favorites. Of course that we can not forget the other competitors. Names as Yago Dora, that did an excellent participation in last year; the talentous young Michael Rodrigues; and still Jessé Mendes. Some "gringos"(foreigners), between them the Hawaiian John John Florence, the Australian Julian Wilson and the American Griffin Colapinto, also have very potential to reach good positions.
Then that's it, guys. The most awaited event for us, Brazilians, finally will start and will have until the next day 20 for being finalized. I will be there on Sunday and, on Monday, I will shape a surfboard Gerry Lopez model on the beach. I wait everybody in Saquarema! Aloha and good waves!

Ítalo Ferreira(photo)divides the leadership with Julian Wilson(AUS)

Action in Saquarema
Brazilian stage of CT starts today with some surfers out and equilibrium in the top of the ranking
Renato de Alexandrino
renato.alexandrino@oglobo.com.br
Equilibrium. This is the word of the time in the Championship Tour of Surfing(CT, initials in English), that has its fourth stage starting today, in Saquarema. Only two thousand points separate the first five positions, with two surfers - the Australian Julian Wilson(AUS) and the Brazilian Ítalo Ferreira(BRA) - dividing the leadership. A very different scenario from that observed in the last seasons, when an athlete arrived to Brazilian competition right in the front.
In the first three stages, in Australia, Julian won one; Ítalo, other: the third, in Margaret River, was cancelled by shark activity, which helped to keep the Ranking even. The World Surf League confirmed yesterday that will finalize the Championship of Margaret River in Indonesia, in June, right after the event of Bali, fifth stop of the Circuit.
-I believe that this year will be one of the best. Nobody run in the leadership , and each event will be a story. I am so happy by wearing the Yellow Jersey(reserved to the leader of the Ranking), however no comfortable. We have many stages in the future. With these guys here is not easy - said the "potiguar"(surfer of Rio Grande do Norte) Ítalo, 24 years newly completed, pointing to Adriano de Souza(BRA)and Gabriel Medina(BRA).
Ítalo, Medina(7th in the Ranking)and Adriano(10th)may receive a home help. The surfer of São Paulo(SP)Deivid Silva won the Trials disputed yesterday in the good waves of Itaúna and will face Julian in the Round 1. Nowadays in the third position of Qualifying Series(QS), that classifies ten surfers to CT, Deivid is not a begginer in the art of putting water in someone else's draft beer. Two years ago, the Australian Matt Wilkinson arrived to the Brazilian stage as isolated leader, after a magical season start. Faced Deivid, that competed as Wild Card, and was eliminated.
-I have nothing to loose and had already this story. Let's see if I am able to end with the party of "gringos"(foreigners), surf well against Julian and help Ítalo - said the smiling free sniper.
With the classification of Deivid, the Men's event in Saquarema will have the expressive number of 14 Brazilians, with names as Miguel Pupo(BRA) and Wiggolly Dantas(BRA)replacing the surfers that opted not to come., as Kelly Slater(USA) and Joel Parkinson(AUS).The Brazilians are three: Silvana Lima(BRA), Taís de Almeida(BRA), that won the Trials, and Tatiana Weston-Webb. The "Hawaiian-Gaucha", born in Porto Alegre, but based in Hawaii, decided to compete by Brazil, looking a place in the Olympic Games of Tokyo 2020.

Surf - World Circuit
Renewed, Italo wants to keep Brazil in the top
"Potiguar"(surfer of Rio Grande do Norte),that overcame injury and now divides the leadership of Ranking of World Circuit with the Australian Julian Wilson, arrives inspired to the stage of Saquarema after to conquer his first win, in Bells Beach
JONAS MOURA
jonasmoura@lancenet.com.br
The Brazilian tradition of scaring the surfers of other countries continues, and the name of the time is Ítalo Ferreira. The surfer of Rio Grande do Norte(RN), that defends the leadership of Ranking with the Australian Julian Wilson, is attraction of OI Rio Pro, Brazilian stage of World Championship Tour(WCT), that starts today, in Saquarema, and has the window until the day 20th of May.
Recovered of the athlete after one year full of uncertainties impresses. He finished the last season in 22nd position and was almost out of the elite in 2018.
His best results in the last season were two fifths position, in Gold Coast(AUS)and in Pipe Masters, in Hawaii. He lost three stages after twisting the right ankle in the back of an aerial of backside training in Australia.
With an aggressive style, Ítalo has phases of highlight since 2015. But it lacked to win a stage. The gap generated charges from all sides. After three years in the WCT the triumph, full of energy, happened in Bells Beach, in April of this year, in the Final against the idol Mick Fanning, three times World Champion, that retired in that event.
-Bells was something incredible. I needed that title for taking off a weight of my back, that charge of never to win a stage before, that everybody talked about. By being against Fanning, was still more special. My week was perfect. I felt that everything was flowing.- said the surfer, in an interview to Lance! during the OI event, in Saquarema, in the last Wednesday.
-We talk to each other, many times by message. About surfing or only for kidding. He encourages me. Until today, I never forget of the first autograph that asked for him.
Ítalo started in 2018 with a 13th position, in Gold Coast, conquered the title in Bells and was classified to the Round 3 in Margaret River, until the event was cancelled due to two shark attacks to the surfers in the area near to the competition.
-Today, Jeffreys Bay is my biggest challenge. I think that still have something to show in these waves. I feel that I am more constant nowadays, but can not fall into comfort zone.
