Renewed, Italo wants to keep Brazil in the top

"Potiguar"(surfer of Rio Grande do Norte),that overcame injury and now divides the leadership of Ranking of World Circuit with the Australian Julian Wilson, arrives inspired to the stage of Saquarema after to conquer his first win, in Bells Beach

JONAS MOURA
jonasmoura@lancenet.com.br

The Brazilian tradition of scaring the surfers of other countries continues, and the name of the time is Ítalo Ferreira. The surfer of Rio Grande do Norte(RN), that defends the leadership of Ranking with the Australian Julian Wilson, is attraction of OI Rio Pro, Brazilian stage of World Championship Tour(WCT), that starts today, in Saquarema, and has the window until the day 20th of May.

Recovered of the athlete after one year full of uncertainties impresses. He finished the last season in 22nd position and  was almost out of the elite in 2018.

His best results in the last season were two fifths position, in Gold Coast(AUS)and in Pipe Masters, in Hawaii. He lost three stages after twisting the right ankle in the back of an aerial of backside training in Australia.

With an aggressive style, Ítalo has phases of highlight since 2015. But it lacked to win a stage. The gap generated charges from all sides. After three years in the WCT the triumph, full of energy, happened in Bells Beach, in April of this year, in the Final against the idol Mick Fanning, three times World Champion, that retired in that event.

-Bells was something incredible. I needed that title for taking off a weight of my back, that charge of never to win a stage before, that everybody talked about. By being against Fanning, was still more special. My week was perfect. I felt that everything was flowing.- said the surfer, in an interview to Lance! during the OI event, in Saquarema, in the last Wednesday.

-We talk to each other, many times by message. About surfing or only for kidding. He encourages me. Until today, I never forget of the first autograph that asked for him.

Ítalo started in 2018 with a 13th position, in Gold Coast, conquered the title in Bells and was classified to the Round 3 in Margaret River, until the event was cancelled due to two shark attacks to the surfers in the area near to the competition.

-Today, Jeffreys Bay is my biggest challenge. I think that still have something to show in these waves. I feel that I am more constant nowadays, but can not fall into comfort zone.

New 'brazuca' in the spot

In fourth in the WCT, Tatiana Weston-Webb who naturalized herself Brazilian to try an Olympic place in 2020,says not to fear critics by choice and projects evolution of the Women's surfing in the country

JONAS MOURA
jonasmoura@lancenet.com.br

At the end of the third stage of World Championship Tour(WCT), in April, in Margaret River(AUS),Brazil has the only result in the Women's Ranking the tenth position of Silvana Lima. No heat was disputed since than, but on the eve of the OI Rio Pro, the fourth event of the year, the country can already show a star in the top 4.

The novelty is Tatiana Weston-Webb, who completes today 22 years old. Born in Porto Alegre, the young moved when she had two months old to the island of kauai, in Hawaii, and represented the American state. But she was seduced by the chance of disputing the Tokyo-2020 Olympic Games, which will mark the debut of surfing, by native country.

With the lack of talents in the Women's suit, the decision was already studied by Brazilian Confederation of Surfing(CBS)since 2016, but was only sacramentalized in the beginning of this year.

Naturalized the surfer will have in Rio de Janeiro stage that starts this Friday and has the window opened until day 20th, her first opportunity for defending the "new" nation.

She denies feeling any discomfort for taking the hope of other Brazilian. Although Hawaii has its own flag in the world of surfing, the same is not true for the Olympics. In this case, the surfers have to wear the United States uniform.

-I did not feel any discomfort, because I did not take anyone's place. I am Brazilian by birth and I am in the dispute for one of the places to represent Brazil in Tokyo. Nothing is defined about who goes - said Tatiana, who will be announced today as an athlete of OI team, to Lance!.

Words in Portuguese are still a challenge. But the connection with Brazil grows day by day. Tatiana, that surfs since eight years old, is daughter of the former bodyboarder "gaúcha"Tanira Guimarães and the English surfer Doug Weston-Webb, based in Hawaii. She is still trained by Leandro Dora from Paraná(PR)since 2016.

She will only come to the country for training and continue to live in Hawaii. But she says that if depends of her, the story with Brazil will not end very soon.

-There already is a generation of young surfers being prepared for the future. The Women's  will grow a lot in the next years in Brazil. We only need more competitions -Weston-Webb said.

*brazuca - is a slang for Brazilian
*gaúcha  - from Rio Grande do Sul

2018 OI RIO PRO -SAQUAREMA, RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL OVERVIEW by surfworldtour.blogspot.com by Paulo Piqueres
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The fourth event of the Championship Tour(CT#4) will start next Friday, May 11th, in Itaúna Beach, Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The main structure will be in Itaúna Beach, but also there will be an alternative structure, in Barrinha Beach, in case of lack of waves in Itaúna, or something else.

Last year, in the OI Rio Pro in Saquarema(RJ), the 2015 World Champion, A. de Souza(BRA)surfer of Guarujá(SP) won all the heats since the beginning of the competition, we mean the Round 1, Round 3, Round 4, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and the most important, the Final, against the Australian surfer A. Buchan(AUS)that surfed very well in the long and heavy waves of Saquarema(RJ).In 2017 in Saquarema(RJ)G. Medina(BRA)was defeated by Y. Dora(BRA)in the Round 5 for small difference, both Brazilians surfers gave a surf show with aerials.

We started working on surfing in 2008 in Hang Loose Pro, since this year, A. de Souza(BRA)disputed the Final in 2009 and was overcame by K. Slater(USA) in Vila Beach, Imbituba, Santa Catarina, Brazil. In 2011, A. de Souza(BRA)won the event Billabong Rio Pro in Arpoador Beach in Rio de Janeiro, over the great Australian surfer T. Burrow(AUS).T. Burrow(AUS)won the event in Brazil for three times: in 1999 in Rio de Janeiro; in 2002 in Saquarema(RJ) and in 2004 in Florianópolis(SC).(See the Tribute to Taj Burrow on this blog in 2017 May.)The Australian D. Macaulay(AUS)won the event in Brazil for four times.

In 2013, A. de Souza(BRA)disputed the Final in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, and was overcame by the South African J. Smith(SAF)-2017 4th position in Jeep Leaderboard Ranking. A. de Souza(BRA)usually surfs very well in Brazil, where he has many and many fans on the beach.

The 2016/17 World Champion J. J. Florence(HAW)won the event in Brazil twice, in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro in 2012 over the World Champion of that year, the Australian J. Parkinson(AUS)and in 2016 in Grumari/Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro over another Australian surfer J. Freestone(AUS)that defeated the 2014 World Champion G. Medina(BRA)in the Semifinals.

In 2014, the Tahitian M. Bourez(PYF)overcame the American surfer K. Andino(USA)-the 7th position in 2017 Jeep Leaderboard Ranking- and was the champion of Billabong Rio Pro in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. In 2015, F. Toledo(BRA)was the champion of the first OI Rio Pro in Barra da Tijuca, when defeated the Australian B. Durbidge(AUS)in the Final. B. Durbidge(AUS)won the first event we went in 2008 - Vila beach, Imbituba, Santa Catarina. We can not forget the rookies, that are surfing very well this season, as the Brazilians: J. Mendes(BRA), M. Rodrigues(BRA), T. Hermes(BRA), Y. Dora(BRA); the American G. Colapinto(USA).

So as we can check above many top surfers are able to win the great event in Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, considered the "Maracanã" of surfing in Brazil.

The Australian top surfers J. Wilson(AUS)-3rd in 2017 Jeep Leaderboard Ranking, A. Buchan(AUS), M. Wilkinson(AUS), O. Wright(AUS), all experienced athletes with good shape and performance also surfed very well in Saquarema(RJ) in 2017.

So let's wait till the beginning of the competition this Friday, to check the performance of the best surfers of the world in Brazilian waters. Finally we can never forget the talentous surfer of Maresias, São Sebastião(SP)G. Medina(BRA)2014 World Champion,2015 and 2016 third position in the Final Ranking, and 2nd in 2017, that is fighting for his second World Championship, but however still did not win the main event in Brazil.

The 2018 Jeep Leaderboard Ranking after the events in Australia  has two leaders: the Australian J. Wilson(AUS) and the Brazilian I. Ferreira(BRA)so both top surfers will wear the Yellow jersey in Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

note: Maracanã is soccer stadium in Rio de Janeiro, considered the best in Brazil.
