A Tribute to GABRIEL MEDINA(BRA)2014 World Champion -2015 Triple Crown Champion of Surfing - 2016 Top 3-World Surf League

 A Tribute to GABRIEL MEDINA(BRA)2014 World Champion -2015 Triple Crown Champion of Surfing - 2016 Top 3-World Surf League
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am from RS, the Southern state of Brazil, 1500 km -918 miles- from Rio de Janeiro,I started working with surfing in Imbituba Santa catarina in 2008 WCT -World Championship Tour when Bede Durbidge(AUS)overcamed Jeremy flores(FRA) in the Final and clinched the title of the stage.This time I worked with a celular Nokia 5225i, with the minimum resolution, and "only" 25 seconds of filming.

In 2010, I bought a new Celular Motorola with 1.3 Mb of resolution, when Jadson andre(BRA)overcame Kelly Slater(USA) in the final.

In 2011, the World Tour of Surfing moved to Rio de Janeiro and I came for this huge town for the first time.. I came by Azul airlines, went to Barra da Tijuca posto 4 -Sheraton, when Adriano overcamed Taj burrow (AUS)-check the overview of this great Australian surfer in the blog -in the final in Arpoador beach. So I came back to the south by Penha buslines.It was a long day trip of 24 hrs. I used to take pictures and filmed.

In 2012, I boutght a Nokia 500 with 5 Mb of resolutotion and work in WCTs 2012, 2013.

In May of 2014 during the stage in Postinho of Barra da Tijuca I had the pleasure to know Gabriel Medina(BRA) and "shake" his hand. In final stage of 2014 WCT, Gabriel Medina(BRA)clinched the World Champion of surfing in Pipeline, Hawaii. He was the first Brazilian to be World Champion. So the newspapers in Rio de Janeiro, released much material of the conquest of Gabriel Medina(BRA)than I started to prepare versions in English of Newspapers: Extra, O Globo, Lance, Metro.,so it was an upgrade for my small blog of surfing.

In 2015, the biggest event of surfing in Brazil, OI Rio Pro, Felipe Toledo(BRA)clinched the championship in Barra da Tijuca, and I decided to prepare an Overview of "Filipinho", I worked a lot in this Overview, and later on, my blog receive an Award of a Foreign blog -as the best post of Brazilians blogs in sports -I became so happy, because I did all the work that I love for myself.

Than after this, I started to stay much time in Rio de Janeiro,in a simple hotel in downtown.This year, Adriano de Souza(BRA)was the second Brazilian the clinched the World Champion of Surfing, in final stage in Pipeline, Oahu, Hawaii. So I decide to buy a camera for filming better the events.
My dream was a Sony camera with power zoom. Fortunetelly I found the camera in Shopping Central, av. Rio Branco, downtown of Rio de Janeiro and I bought it in January 16, 2016 - 1/6/16...

I bought the camera and in February I came back to my hometown. My camera has many resources, and I studied them, and I still have to learn more about, and only tested it when a strong wind arrived in my town, I filmed some coconut trees in the farmhouse of my family.. because the coconut trees reminded me "beaches", nature, and so on.

Than in May I came back to Rio de Janeiro to the stage in Brazil - the stage had two structures, the biggest in Barra da Tijuca, and the alternative one in Grumari beach. Unfortunately The biggest structure of a surf event of all times in Brazil was reached by the strenght of the waves -sea hangover -.

I arrived in Rio de Janeiro on the weekend before the event by Gol Airlines and was worry about how to go to Grumari, because there is farway and has no public tranportation to there. But fortunatelly the WSL -World Surf League- provided a Microbus to Grumari with departures from Recreio Shopping. Recreio dos Bandeirantes is faraway from downtown -around 40 km-25 miles- I will never forget this day.

I woke up at 4:00 am and took the bus 316 through the Linha Amarela -yellow line - and the trip took 90 minutes -an hour and a half. So I caught the first Microbus trip to Grumari beach with some surfers and fans of the "most beautiful sport" -around 7:30 am we arrived in Grumari beach in the round 1, heat 2 - so I choose a strategic position to "debut" my dreamed camera. I did not know how to use that strenght "zoom"- 60x- but when I focused the lens to the sea the "first" surfer that I filmed was nothig less than our "great" World Champion of Surfing, GABRIEL MEDINA(BRA)one of the most talentous surfers of nowadays, perhaps of all times!!!The Champion of 2015 Triple Crow of Surfing in Hawaii. He was paddling, searching a wave in the heat, but this moment the sea did not had good condiction, little waves...

The structure in Barra da Tijuca was rebuilded and Gabriel reached the Semifinal, but unfortunatelly was defeated by Jack Freestone(AUS), that was surfing very well in this event.However John John Florence(HAW) overcame Jack Freestone(AUS)in the Final and won the 2016 Oi Rio Pro - check the Video "A tribute to John John Florence(HAW)2016 World Champion--posted in January of 2017...

GABRIEL MEDINA(BRA)is always ahead: he was the first surfer to perform the maneuver "Backflip" in the World Circuit of Surfing in all times.
I filmed his historical "backflip" but I will keep it to my upcoming surf channel on Youtube. I was on the shore in Postinho, my water was over, but a "voice" said for me-
 -Stay for while because is Gabriel on the water, so...

I decided to prepared this tribute to GABRIEL MEDINA(BRA)because he deserves it as nobody else.

At night right after the stage finished in Barra da Tijuca, my premolar tooth broke and bled so I came back to my hometown to go the dentist, and came back again to Rio de Janeiro in August to Olimpic Games - In this moment GABRIEL MEDINA(BRA)and John hohn were disputing the Title, so in October 13th I bought a ticket to Los angeles, to go to Hawaii. Because John John Florence(HAW)might be "early champion" in Portugal only if GABRIEL MEDINA(BRA)did not pass the Round 3, and the Hawaiian surfer reached the Final. I thought to myself, one of the two situations might happen but not both. But in October 25th, J.J Florence(HAW)cliched the World title of surfing, I prepared a video to John John Florence(HAW)and posted in January of 2017, in this month my blog reached a record of 8,169 accesses.I stayed in Rio till the Carnival, and came back to the South on March.

In 2017 May I returned to Rio de Janeiro to work in my 10th WCT, in Saquarema beach. I stayed in downtown, used to wake up at 4:00 am and went to the Bus station and caught the 1001 bus lines at 6:00 am, direct to Saquarema. I arrived on the shore around 8:30, so I missed the first heats in the morning, and could film only two heats of GABRIEL MEDINA(BRA)in Round 4, and the Recap, Round 5. Next year I will stay in Saquarema during the event.

Finally thanks God for giving me "health", strenght to keep doing my work, everything by "myself"...

                                                      Schedule of Lectures

                                          CD - compact disc

                                                     Credential

Now I am in Rio de Janeiro since the beginning of August, I prepared the posts of the 7th stage of World Circuit of surfing in Teahupo'o, in Tahiti, French Polynesia, and awaiting the 8th stage in Trestles ,California, that is upcoming  next Wednesday, September 6th, so I visited the Marina Boat Fest II, because I like boats so much  since I was a kid.

The  event  was so nice and high level, I receved a credential and visited the Pier 1 that had big boats and I entered inside  a big boat with three cabins -a catamaran -for the first time in my life.
I  also received  a nice CD of eletronic music, that is my favorite one right now.
And participated in Lectures organized by CL Velas.

-August 28th-  Systems  and Maintenance of  Vessels - by Mr. Gustavo Torres;

-August 29th- First Aid - by Fernando Melo - Instructor of Mar do Rio;

-August 30th -Tips and cautions needed for auxiliary outboard engine  up to 15HP -by  Instructor of  CL Velas;

-August 31st -Nautical Generators by Engineer Leonardo Machado - Forza Marittima / Powerboat Brasil and Engineer Flávio Cunha - Forza Marittima / Power Brasil.

I learned a lot about boats, engines, nautical generators in the lectures, because I have  curiosity about besides that  in some stages of World Circuit of Surfing-for instance in Fiji Islands- the media, photografers, videomakers stay in boats to work in the events. Perhaps one day in the future I will work there.

Finally I would like to thank Mr. Luis Evangelista- the Lula - and Mrs. Cintia Knoth of CL Velas for the very nice treatment during the lectures.

Searching for 2017 Title of WORLD CHAMPION OF SURFING by Paulo Piqueres - surfworldtour.blogspot.com
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It seems for me that in this season the decision for the Title of World Champion of Surfing will be in the last contest in Pipeline, Hawaii, USA. The top 4 surfers are separated for around a thousand points or less.The 2015 World Champion, A. de Souza(BRA)was defeated in Round 3 and fell down a position in the Ranking. G. Medina(BRA)arrived to the Final and went up two positions, kind of changed the position with F. Toledo(BRA)that was defeated in Round 2. Now the leader is the South African J. Smith(RSA)that arrived in Semifinals, he changed the position with M. Wilkinson(AUS)the previous leader, that was defeated in the Recap -Round 5 and fell down two positions so J. Smith(RSA) will wear the yellow jersey in Trestles, California. USA. The Hawaiian J. J. Florence(HAW)stayed in second position, and O. Wright(AUS)stayed in fourth position.C. O'Leary(AUS)stayed in the 10th position in Ranking Jeep Leaders.
I agree with G. Medina(BRA) when he said in interview to EXTRA Newspaper, Rio de Janeiro, August 11th, 2017(check the version on the blog)that anyone of Top 10 that win a contest has chance to clinch the World Title of Surfing.There are 40 thousand(40,000) points in game.

Now remains only four contests as follows:

September - Trestles, CA, USA;

October - France and Portugal;

December - Pipeline, Hawaii, USA.

Let's wait for, unfortunately I have no crystal ball to see the future. Perhaps in this season might have a new champion. In top 5, only J. J. Florence(HAW)is already World Champion, the others are fighting for the first title, however we "never" forget G. Medina(BRA)his excellent talent and performance in last two contests: Semifinals in Jeffreys Bay -South Africa, and Final in Teahupo'o -French Polynesia. A. de Souza(BRA) and J.J. Florence(HAW)also are World Champions and searching for bi championship.

Overview of TAH/07 -2017 BILLABONG PRO TAHITI - Teahupo'o - French Polynesia by Paulo Piqueres -surfworldtour.blogspot.com

Overview of TAH/07 -2017 BILLABONG PRO TAHITI - Teahupo'o - French Polynesia by Paulo Piqueres - surfworldtour.blogspot.com

The World Circuit of Surfing arrived in the South Pacific Islands of French Polynesia, in Teahupo'o, where the waves are big and tubular with reefbreak so close the shore so shallow.

Fortunately I could watch this stage by WSL -World Surf League -videos on Youtube. I guess this stage was one of the fastest of the Circuit, if it was not the fastest. Exactly three days as follows:

Day 1 - Friday, August 11th, 2017
16 heats - Round 1 till Round 2 -heat 4

Day 2 - Saturday, August 12th, 2017
20 heats -Round 2 heat 5 to heat 12 and Round 3

Day 3 -Sunday, August 13th, 2017
15 heats -Round 4, Round 5, Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Final
At my opinion the best day of the contest with better condictions, with the barrels so perfect without strong wind. Unfortunately the defending champion  Kelly Slater(USA)that was injured and could not compete the Billabong Pro Tahiti.

Round 1
The world champions Adriano de Souza(BRA), Gabriel Medina(BRA),  Joel Parkinson(AUS) and John John Florence(HAW), the Brazilians Italo Ferreira(BRA) and I. Gouveia(BRA),the australians , Adrian Buchan(AUS) C. O'Leary(AUS), J. Wilson(AUS), K. Andino(USA), and J. Duru(FRA)and the leader-yellow jersey- Matt Wilkinson(AUS)overcame their opponents and passed direct to Round 3.

Round 2 the recap -
On this round,the World champion M. Fanning(AUS)and the top surfers  J. Smith(RSA),O. Wright(AUS)besides the Tahitian M. Bourez(PYF) , W. Dantas(BRA)won their heats and passed to Round 3. Unfortunately the Brazilians F. Toledo(BRA) and M. PUpo(BRA)were eliminated and stopped in the Recap.

Round 3
Almost all top surfers defeat their opponents and passed to Round 4 except the 2015 World Champion A. de Souza(BRA)was defeated by his compatriot W. Dantas(BRA)that was surfing very well the barrels in Teahupo'o. The Australians A. Buchan(AUS),C. O'Leary(AUS), J. Wilson(AUS)also passed to next round. The surprise was C. Coffin(USA)that defeated the local M. Bourez(TAH)

Round 4
In this important Round of three men, the top 4 O. Wrigth(AUS), K. Andino(USA), the 2016 World Champion J.J. Florence(HAW)and the French J. Duru, that was surfing very well in Tahiti, overcame their rivals and passed direct to the Quarterfinals. G. Medina(BRA)did interference when M. Wilkinson(AUS)had the priority so the Brazilian had only the score of his best wave in the heat.

Round 5
At opening heat of the Recap G. Medina (BRA)faced C. O'Leary(AUS)top 10 of the Ranking. The 2014 World Champion surfed good barrels and passed to the Quarterfinals. W. Dantas(BRA)surfed very well and defeated the leader of the Tour M. Wilkinson(AUS).The top 3, J. Smith(RSA) and top 8, J. Wilson(AUS)with great performance also passed to the Quarterfinals.

Quarterfinals
At opening heat G. Medina(BRA)surfed a wave with score "10.00", and overcame the top 4 O. Wright(AUS).In the heat 2, K. AndinO(USA)was surfing very well in Teahupo'o and defeated the Brazilian W. Dantas(BRA).In the heat 3, a great duel between the top 2 J.J. Florence(HAW) and top 3 J. Smith(RSA).This time the South AFrican won  the heat, for small difference and in the last heat top 8 J. Wilson overcame his rival J. Duru(FRA).

Semifinals
At opening heat was a great duel between two great surfers:G. Medina(BRA)and K. ANdino(USA), the Brazilian overcame his opponent and was guaranteed in the final.
In the heat 2, J. Wilson(AUS)surfed very well and overcame his rival, top 3, J. Smith(RSA).

Final
G. Medina(BRA)is so focused to conquer the bi World Championship this season. He surfed nice barrels with good scores but J. Wilson did not gave up and in the last three minutes  turn over the heat, and clinched the 2017 Billabong Pro Tahiti. This heat was so exciting with great performance of the best surfers in the world inside the beautiful tubes.That is why the surf is most beautiful sport at my opinion.

Filipinho runs behind in CT

Positive by the good result in Africa, Toledo seeks to go  even more up in the Ranking in the stage of Tahiti

Filipe Toledo inside a tube in Teahupo'o  last year

Renato de Alexandrino
renato.alexandrino@oglobo.com.br

After the storm, comes the bonanza. Filipe Toledo(BRA) lived like no one this old adage in the last stages of the World Circuit of Surfing. Eliminated in Saquarema, he cursed the judges and was suspended in the Fiji stage. He returned to compete in South Africa, winning the CT of Jeffreys Bay with a performance that was acclaimed by critics and friends of the Circuit. Filipinho now tries to take advantage of the positive moment  in searching of a good result in the CT of Tahiti, the seventh stage of the Circuit, which begins today in the dangerous waves of Teahupoo.

 Tahiti does not bring good memories for Filipe Toledo(BRA). He passed the recap only once, in 2015, when he was eliminated in the Round five. That year, it was marked when finishing a battery without surfing  a wave at least..

 Filipinho has already been criticized for failing to achieve good results on big and tubular waves such as Tahiti and Hawaii. The victory in South Africa, however, had  an impact on the specialized media, which praised the strength in the maneuvers of the Brazilian.

I hope I have changed that perception (of being a surfer only of  aerials). I have worked hard for this and I know that I have evolved a lot. It was a matter of time- Filipino said in an e-mail interview. Seventh in the Ranking, he avoids speaking in a World Title fight: After everything that happened this year, I just want to have great performances. About title, at the right time everyone will know.

Medina still dreams with the World Title

Who also arrives positive in Tahiti by what showed in South  Africa is Gabriel Medina(BRA). The 2014 World Champion was only stopped in the Semifinals. And, unlike of Filipinho, Medina has great memories of Teahupo'o, where already clinched a contest(2014)and was vice in other(2015).

-It is one of my favorite waves, if it is not the favorite. I worked so much to have a good performance in J-Bay and I am doing the same to Teahupo'o - said Medina.

The South African stage did not change so much the fight in the top. The Top 3 , Matt Wilkinson(AUS), John John Florence(HAW)and Jordy Smith(RSA), stopped in the Quarterfinals, and are separated by only 600 points. Adriano de Souza(BRA)fell down to fifth, four thousand points behind the leader.

Medina went up  to the ninth position and came back to dream with the World bichampionship, after a beginning of season so irregular.

-Anyone of Top 10 that clinch a contest ,is  already in the direct dispute. I only depend of myself. There are 50 thousand points(remain five stages in the calendar, including  the Tahiti)in game. I want to arrive in Hawaii with chance of Title - advises Medina.

Final Straight
After Tahiti, will remain four stages to the end of the season

After Tahiti, the CT will still have stages in California, France, Portugal and Hawaii.
