Searching for 2017 Title of WORLD CHAMPION OF SURFING by Paulo Piqueres - surfworldtour.blogspot.com
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It seems for me that in this season the decision for the Title of World Champion of Surfing will be in the last contest in Pipeline, Hawaii, USA. The top 4 surfers are separated for around a thousand points or less. The 2015 World Champion, A. de Souza(BRA)was defeated in Round 3 and fell down a position in the Ranking. G. Medina(BRA)arrived to the Final and went up two positions, kind of changed the position with F. Toledo(BRA)that was defeated in Round 2. Now the leader is the South African J. Smith(RSA)that arrived in Semifinals, he changed the position with M. Wilkinson(AUS)the previous leader, that was defeated in the Recap -Round 5 and fell down two positions so J. Smith(RSA) will wear the yellow jersey in Trestles, California. USA. The Hawaiian J. J. Florence(HAW)stayed in second position, and O. Wright(AUS)stayed in fourth position.C. O'Leary(AUS)stayed in the 10th position in Ranking Jeep Leaders.
I agree with G. Medina(BRA) when he said in interview to EXTRA Newspaper, Rio de Janeiro, August 11th, 2017(check the version on the blog)that anyone of Top 10 that win a contest has chance to clinch the World Title of Surfing. There are 40 thousand(40,000) points in game.
Now remains only four contests as follows:
September - Trestles, CA, USA;
October - France and Portugal;
December - Pipeline, Hawaii, USA.
Let's wait for, unfortunately I have no crystal ball to see the future. Perhaps in this season might have a new champion. In top 5, only J. J. Florence(HAW)is already World Champion, the others are fighting for the first title, however we "never" forget G. Medina(BRA)his excellent talent and performance in last two contests: Semifinals in Jeffreys Bay -South Africa, and Final in Teahupo'o -French Polynesia. A. de Souza(BRA) and J.J. Florence(HAW)also are World Champions and searching for bi championship.

Overview of TAH/07 -2017 BILLABONG PRO TAHITI - Teahupo'o - French Polynesia by Paulo Piqueres - surfworldtour.blogspot.com
The World Circuit of Surfing arrived in the South Pacific Islands of French Polynesia, in Teahupo'o, where the waves are big and tubular with reefbreak so close the shore so shallow.
Fortunately I could watch this stage by WSL -World Surf League -videos on Youtube. I guess this stage was one of the fastest of the Circuit, if it was not the fastest. Exactly three days as follows:
Day 1 - Friday, August 11th, 2017
16 heats - Round 1 till Round 2 -heat 4
Day 2 - Saturday, August 12th, 2017
20 heats -Round 2 heat 5 to heat 12 and Round 3
Day 3 -Sunday, August 13th, 2017
15 heats -Round 4, Round 5, Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Final
At my opinion the best day of the contest with better condictions, with the barrels so perfect without strong wind. Unfortunately the defending champion Kelly Slater(USA)that was injured and could not compete the Billabong Pro Tahiti.
Round 1
The world champions Adriano de Souza(BRA), Gabriel Medina(BRA), Joel Parkinson(AUS) and John John Florence(HAW), the Brazilians Italo Ferreira(BRA) and I. Gouveia(BRA),the australians , Adrian Buchan(AUS) C. O'Leary(AUS), J. Wilson(AUS), K. Andino(USA), and J. Duru(FRA)and the leader-yellow jersey- Matt Wilkinson(AUS)overcame their opponents and passed direct to Round 3.
Round 2 the recap -
On this round, the World champion M. Fanning(AUS)and the top surfers J. Smith(RSA),O. Wright(AUS)besides the Tahitian M. Bourez(PYF) , W. Dantas(BRA)won their heats and passed to Round 3. Unfortunately the Brazilians F. Toledo(BRA) and M. PUpo(BRA)were eliminated and stopped in the Recap.
Round 3
Almost all top surfers defeat their opponents and passed to Round 4 except the 2015 World Champion A. de Souza(BRA)was defeated by his compatriot W. Dantas(BRA)that was surfing very well the barrels in Teahupo'o. The Australians A. Buchan(AUS),C. O'Leary(AUS), J. Wilson(AUS)also passed to next round. The surprise was C. Coffin(USA)that defeated the local M. Bourez(TAH)
Round 4
In this important Round of three men, the top 4 O. Wrigth(AUS), K. Andino(USA), the 2016 World Champion J.J. Florence(HAW)and the French J. Duru, that was surfing very well in Tahiti, overcame their rivals and passed direct to the Quarterfinals. G. Medina(BRA)did interference when M. Wilkinson(AUS)had the priority so the Brazilian had only the score of his best wave in the heat.
Round 5
At opening heat of the Recap G. Medina (BRA)faced C. O'Leary(AUS)top 10 of the Ranking. The 2014 World Champion surfed good barrels and passed to the Quarterfinals. W. Dantas(BRA)surfed very well and defeated the leader of the Tour M. Wilkinson(AUS).The top 3, J. Smith(RSA) and top 8, J. Wilson(AUS)with great performance also passed to the Quarterfinals.
Quarterfinals
At opening heat G. Medina(BRA)surfed a wave with score "10.00", and overcame the top 4 O. Wright(AUS).In the heat 2, K. AndinO(USA)was surfing very well in Teahupo'o and defeated the Brazilian W. Dantas(BRA).In the heat 3, a great duel between the top 2 J.J. Florence(HAW) and top 3 J. Smith(RSA).This time the South AFrican won the heat, for small difference and in the last heat top 8 J. Wilson overcame his rival J. Duru(FRA).
Semifinals
At opening heat was a great duel between two great surfers:G. Medina(BRA)and K. ANdino(USA), the Brazilian overcame his opponent and was guaranteed in the final.
In the heat 2, J. Wilson(AUS)surfed very well and overcame his rival, top 3, J. Smith(RSA).
Final
G. Medina(BRA)is so focused to conquer the bi World Championship this season. He surfed nice barrels with good scores but J. Wilson did not gave up and in the last three minutes turn over the heat, and clinched the 2017 Billabong Pro Tahiti. This heat was so exciting with great performance of the best surfers in the world inside the beautiful tubes. That is why the surf is most beautiful sport at my opinion.

Filipinho runs behind in CT
Positive by the good result in Africa, Toledo seeks to go even more up in the Ranking in the stage of Tahiti
Filipe Toledo inside a tube in Teahupo'o last year

After the storm, comes the bonanza. Filipe Toledo(BRA) lived like no one this old adage in the last stages of the World Circuit of Surfing. Eliminated in Saquarema, he cursed the judges and was suspended in the Fiji stage. He returned to compete in South Africa, winning the CT of Jeffreys Bay with a performance that was acclaimed by critics and friends of the Circuit. Filipinho now tries to take advantage of the positive moment in searching of a good result in the CT of Tahiti, the seventh stage of the Circuit, which begins today in the dangerous waves of Teahupoo.
Tahiti does not bring good memories for Filipe Toledo(BRA). He passed the recap only once, in 2015, when he was eliminated in the Round five. That year, it was marked when finishing a battery without surfing a wave at least..
Filipinho has already been criticized for failing to achieve good results on big and tubular waves such as Tahiti and Hawaii. The victory in South Africa, however, had an impact on the specialized media, which praised the strength in the maneuvers of the Brazilian.
I hope I have changed that perception (of being a surfer only of aerials). I have worked hard for this and I know that I have evolved a lot. It was a matter of time- Filipino said in an e-mail interview. Seventh in the Ranking, he avoids speaking in a World Title fight: After everything that happened this year, I just want to have great performances. About title, at the right time everyone will know.
Medina still dreams with the World Title
Who also arrives positive in Tahiti by what showed in South Africa is Gabriel Medina(BRA). The 2014 World Champion was only stopped in the Semifinals. And, unlike of Filipinho, Medina has great memories of Teahupo'o, where already clinched a contest(2014)and was vice in other(2015).
-It is one of my favorite waves, if it is not the favorite. I worked so much to have a good performance in J-Bay and I am doing the same to Teahupo'o - said Medina.
The South African stage did not change so much the fight in the top. The Top 3 , Matt Wilkinson(AUS), John John Florence(HAW)and Jordy Smith(RSA), stopped in the Quarterfinals, and are separated by only 600 points. Adriano de Souza(BRA)fell down to fifth, four thousand points behind the leader.
Medina went up to the ninth position and came back to dream with the World bichampionship, after a beginning of season so irregular.
-Anyone of Top 10 that clinch a contest ,is already in the direct dispute. I only depend of myself. There are 50 thousand points(remain five stages in the calendar, including the Tahiti)in game. I want to arrive in Hawaii with chance of Title - advises Medina.
Final Straight
After Tahiti, will remain four stages to the end of the season
After Tahiti, the CT will still have stages in California, France, Portugal and Hawaii.
