Rio de Janeiro, Monday, May11th, 2015Filipe Toledo
Also known as Filipinho, the 20-year surfer is the big bet for the future of Brazilian surfing. With 1,73m , he has his power at air manuevers. Born in Ubatuba, São Paulo, he has soccer as one of his hobbies.
May 11th
On the first day, the event was "lay day", cloudy with 1-to-2foot waves and light wind.
Gabriel Medina(BRA)a surfer of Maresias(SP)is the current World
Champion and the event was the biggest surfing championship in Brazil.
There were many people in Postinho - Barra da Tijuca, from all country around and overseas too.
May 12th
ROUND 1
heat 10
F. TOLEDO(BRA)16.27 X K. Andino(USA)11.93 x A. Melling(AUS)8.40
There were many people at Postinho,so it was hard to work taking
pictures and film the event but I tried to do my best as always.
F. TOLEDO(BRA)defeated two good surfers, A. Melling(AUS)with very
experience, and K. Andino(USA)that disputed the BILLABONG RIO PRO Final
last
year.
So he went direct to Round 3.
May 15th
ROUND 3
heat 2
F. TOLEDO(BRA)15.60 X 11.34 W. Dantas(BRA)
So he went to Round 4.
ROUND 4
Heat 1
F. TOLEDO(BRA)17.83 x M. Banting(AUS)13.57 x J. J. Florence(HAW)7.74
"Filipinho" defeated two good surfers at this heat, M. Banting(AUS)that defeated K. Slater(USA)11 times World champion,
and J. J. Florence(HAW) 2012 BILLABONG RIO PRO Champion.
So he went direct to Quarterfinals as in 2013, but this time was different!!!
May 16th
Quarterfinals
Heat 1
F. TOLEDO(BRA) 15.00 x 11.50 R. Christie(NZL)
He defeated R. Christie(NZL)a very strong surfer that adapted very well to the heavy waves of Postinho.
Maybe it was the harder dispute for F. Toledo(BRA).
So this this time he went to Semifinals.
May 17th
heat 1
F. TOLEDO(BRA)15.93 X 6.34 I. Ferreira(BRA)
"Filipinho" surfed very well with airs and defeated the second Brazilian at competition.
FINAL
F. TOLEDO(BRA)19.87 X 14.70 B. Durbidge(AUS)
"Filipinho" defeated B. Durbidge(AUS)with his edge maneuvers that defeated F. TOLEDO(BRA)in 2014 Round 3.
All top surfers are very good athletes at maneuvers but depends on
waves condictions of each stop, each surfer has his own surfing style
and adapt himself better to the waves: high, heavy, tube, box, and so on...
F. TOLEDO(BRA)is surfing very well this year, and alredy was the
champion in Gold Coast(AUS)and he is in the second position in WSL
ranking.
At OI RIO PRO, FILIPE TOLEDO(BRA)gave a surfing show to the world and to everybody on the beach.
Finally I would like to point out Bede Durbidge's performance and elegance. He is in the tour for a long time
and recognized -by his words in the podium - that would be so hard to face FILIPE TOLEDO(BRA)in the FINAL.
I know Bede Durbidge(AUS)since my first "WCT"surf championship in 2008 on "Praia da Vila" in Imbituba(SC),when
he defeated Jeremy Flores(FRA)and was the champion, he is so kind with
everybody on the beach, attending for a picture or an autograph,
and so on. Bede Durbidge(AUS)has many fans in Brazil.
